50mpg from a 1.4 16V petrol.

Featured Replies

Hey guys, thought I'd just share the highlight of my day with you all lol. I got 50 mpg from my 1.4 petrol today on a 25 mile journey, something I'm quite pleased about tbh as I wasn't even trying to drive economically :), I usually average around 35. This excitement was soon extinguished when I got a parking ticket soon after

I used to hit 50 once in a while in my 1.4 16v.. I had to drive like a dead Sloth though.

I'm only just hitting 50 in the vRS.. getting between 45 and 47 at the min.

Is the 100BHP version, or the 75hp one? Cos even on a run mine never hits that (100bhp).

I got 50once in our 100hp version. About a 6 mile trip in Jersey - long distance for us:rolleyes:

Clutch in downhill and 2000rpm max.....

As long as there was no headwinds, used to get 50 on regular motorway trips in my 16v 1.4 fab saloon. 3500 to 4000 revs in fifth 70-80 MPH. Go over 80 and it comes screaming down.

No cruise control, just light on the right loafer !

54mpg in my 80bhp boho :P that was really boring though!

I managed those figures once, but not too often :)

Mines the 75 bhp one. Haha yeah I had a very boring drive as well! Don't think I went over 55mph :P

cant be that different to the 80 then. i know the 75 and 80 bhp have more torque than the 100bhp ones :)

I got my 1.4 16v estate to average 54.5 mpg yesterday from a 30 mile trip! :)

Not bad, the best I have seen is 53mpg (on the trip 'puter) for an 160mile motorway at 60-70 for most of it.

Normally about 35-40mpg normal driving. Not that different to some vRS's, albeit a lot slower!

putting the clutch in uses more fuel.

Keep the revs between 1.5-2.5k rpm plan a head and try and roll up to obstacles instead of braking at the last minute, block change up e.g. 1st 3rd 5th, keep air con off and i reckon you could hit 60mpg

54.5mpg is impressive! I don't think I'd be able to get that out of mine, too many hills where I live :/

I tend to block change, it's how I was taught to drive so I just do it subconsciously. I think 60mpg will be a challenge, anyone wanna give it a go? :P I imagine a very long and boring motorway drive will be needed to reach that target..

I'm surprised by some of the above. I'd be disappointed if I got less than 50 mpg on a trip in my car. I normally get 50 - 55 mpg for the 20 mile trip between Harrogate and York (which includes a few miles of stop start town driving). It read 80 mpg for the descent down the Kirkstone pass in the Lakes. The car is very well maintained though and I do very much drive for economy. I would also estimate that the trip computer is optimistic by about 4 - 5 mpg compared to my brim to brim calculations.

You're lucky your not me then, you'd be disappointed every day :P

I used one for a round trip of 300 miles a while back. I averaged a speed of 60 mph and the trip computer reported 48.5 mpg, I thought that it was quite good.

What the hell . . . i dont see 50 from my diesel!

good for you though fella! ;)

ive hada record of 55 mpg on my 2.0 petrol, but today with a full car going to oxford and back was fine till edge of oxford (38mpg) but by the time we hit the cinema we were down to 31mpg. by the time we got home we were at 33mpg and i wasnt booting hard, just a lot of roundabouts. Usually going to and from work its about 40-45mpg

It must be a more economic engine than the 8v then , as I only got 45 mpg average on my run down to the National Meet , still not bad for old school technology I suppose!

i often wonder what i would have got out of my 1.4 i had years ago if i knew what i knew now.

lol. It's okay I guess. I'm willing to try to get 60mpg out of my motor but I don't think my estate will manage it. She's a bit too heavy with such a small engine for an estate.

A good tip for good fuel economy is to travel as light as possible for all you peeps. out there willing to give the challenge a go. :D

I couldn't get better than 55.1mpg all week. I don't think my car will do it. You 1.4 hatchback owners may have a chance though.:)

take the spare wheel out the seats and anything you dont need in the car ;)

I'm not gonna try that hard. lol :rubchin:

I've heard the old 1.9 sdi ones were the most economical ones at around 70mpg.

Had first decent run out in 1.4 sport, got 51.9 yesterday over 62 miles to Scarborough , not even trying hard just going with the traffic flow
