Turbo whistle?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been lurking here for years, this is the first time I have not been able to find an answer to a question!

I have a Fabia VRS. which has blown two turbos in the last year. Both fixed under warrenty. (I dont think I drive the car hard, mostly motorway miles getting an average MPG of about 50)

The last one was returned to me a week ago. I have been driving slowly this week to give it a chance to warm up. Alhough I was told this isnt necessary.

Today I noticed a new noise, most noticible in 3rd gear. when I went over 3500 revs. It sounded like all the fans in the car came on full blast. I switched all the fans off opened the vents and tried again. the same "fan" noise happened with no air coming out of the vents so I think this is related to the turbo, but it has never made this noise before.

So my question is. Should it have been making this noise for the past three years, or do I need to go back to the dealer and have them take another look? There is 6 months left on the warrenty but looking at the prices quoted by some on the forum I wouldnt want to dish out for a new turbo! It was also serviced a week when the turbo was replaced. I read on another post that this could be a air filter issue? Any ides?

Cheers

ps. I can manage an oil change but I have no idea what I am looking at under the bonet.

Shouldnt be making that noise, sounds like a boost leak to me.

You should always let the car warm up before driving hard, otherwise the turbo will fail early.

Also, I am suprised that they keep changing the turbo. As you are on your 3rd one now, they should be looking for the cause of the problem, not fixing the symptoms. The turbo should last years with the description of your driving style.

As an example a work friend had a TDI, that went through 3 turbos. Turns out his engine had an oil flow problem, that in the end needed a whole new engine. Had the issue been fixed earlier none of the later repairs would have been needed.

My wife had her turbo go on here last car and she was advised to change her driving style because she was driving for economy and the turbo almost never came in at all. Regularly putting it on cruise at 50mph in 6th for over 200 miles can damage your turbo apparently. Fabulous MPG though:D

Another blown pipe! this time it is the one after the turbo. The very helpfull chap said that this is the pipe that expands when under pressure. Cant remember what he called it! They didnt have one in stock so It has been taped up till next week.

  • 2 weeks later...

how much did the pipe cost you in the end? and what did he use to tape it as im guessing this gets hot

Hi, Sorry for the late reply.

They never said what tape was used. Im assuming it was duct tape. he said he put a lot of it on.

All the repairs have been under warrenty, which is good because it has had two new turbos and 3 other trips for associated pipes and brackets!

that strange as that pipe can take a lot of presure.... most Hybrids, including myself, use that standard hose as there is no aftermarket replacement avalible at the moment.
