tdi vRS DSG problems

Featured Replies

Hi

Got a bit of a problem.

Car is a month old Octavia vRS tdi with dsg gearbox.

Whilst driving in heavy stop/start traffic in London the other day, gear indicator on maxi-dot started to flash between D & N, when I stopped at the next set of lights gear display went to N. Had only been driving for 20-30 mins. Carried on in Tiptronic mode ok, rest of journey home on motorway ok.

Local dealer looked at it, could not find any errors in log, so reset gearbox.

Few days later, driving along a dual-carriageway at 60-70 approaching a slip-road, gear display started to flash between D6 & D.

This weekend, driving along a motorway @ 70, gear display flashing D6/D, gearbox obviously in neutral as engine would rev freely. On same day in slow traffic, driving in 30-40mph traffic whilst in tiptronic (4th selected) lost drive completely for 10secs or so.

Anyone had the same problem??

I have booked it in to a local dealer later this week, but when I spoke to them they have not got a clue!

bad speling!

never heard that one before, there must be some switch or switches to let the car know which position the shifter is in, that would be the first place to look, sounds possibly like a dodgy contact on one of them

This is a guess based on the only other time I've seen behaviour like that in systems, which is that the DSG ECU (computer) has gone nuts and needs replacing. Perhaps a memory issue or something.

Sorry, never had anything like that on mine..keep us informed

Have you tried running it in 'S' rather than 'D'?

Sorry, but never had anything untoward in mine at all - four months old.

Maybe the box was trying to tell you the clutches were overheating and to move the selector to N, when you didnt do it, it overrode you and did it on your behalf.

The DSG box should always be moved to position N when stationary at traffic lights or when traffic has been stationary for a while when using the handbrake otherwise the clutches overheat and burnout prematurely. Holding the car on the footbrake in D releases the clutches.

Think of it in a manual sense of sitting stationary on the clutch bite point permanantly. The DSG box is a manual box with 2 clutches, not a traditional Auto with a torque convertor.

Nor me and I've only ever had DSG. Does sound like a switch or sensor in the box though.

Might be worth protecting yourself in case the car turns out to be a lemon. If its only a month old and they can't find the fault might be worth preparing to reject it. They'll happly have you going back and forth until you get bored but might be worth insisting that if they are unable to fix the car second time round you want a replacement.

When it happened the first time I was in heavy traffic. Flashing gear indicator does indicate that clutch is overheating, but I had only travelled 1-2 miles from a cold start and I was holding car on footbrake whilst stationary. Was stopping at lights, speed up to 20mph (3rd gear) then stop again.

I do notice that the gearbox changes up very early when driving gently - 5th gear at 31mph?

Doesn't explain why it happened when belting along a motorway.

I have read on an Audi forum that it was recommended to use sport mode in traffic as it changes gear less.

As there is no update, i would suggest what m0bov says, and reject it :thumbdwn:

Hi everyone

Car was at Progress Skoda in Bedford this morning.

He initially thought it was the Mechatronic gearbox ecu causing the fault (6-8 week delivery:eek:), but after carrying out diagnostic tests they are sure that it is the temperature sensor in the gearbox.

They have ordered one, which should be fitted next week.

I will keep you posted.

My Audi A4 DSG did over 100000 in 3 years mainly London/M25 driving never did I put in N.It never overheated!!!!
