LED Bulbs

Featured Replies

Ok im getting pretty sick & tired of Bulbs going in the car lately.

Had the following all within a few days

1 x Main Beam go (Passenger Side)

1 x Sidelight go (Driver Side)

1 x Indicator go (Front Driver Side)

1 x Rear Tail go (Passenger Side)

1 x Reverse go (Driver Side)

1 x Indicator go (Rear Driver Side)

Now i know the car is 28 months old and bulbs have never been replaced (apart from silver indicator bulbs and Osram Nightbreakers which i bought when main beam bulb went) so all in all i shouldn't really complain but it just bugged me that all the bulbs went within 3 days

Now i have got LED sides on the way with built in resistors and have emailed Autobulbs Direct as they seem to do some bulbs that *should* work for the rear clusters and the front indicators.

The reason i want LED is the fact they last a damn sight longer (will probably outlast my ownership of the car) and in all honesty i think they look better (im a sucker for anything LED lit :D:D)

Does anybody have any definates for LED bulbs that don't trigger the Bulb failure that is in the Octy II (apart from sides) and where i can buy them from.

So far it's cost near £40 to get replacement bulbs (not including the £17.99 for the LED Sides with Resistors)

Cheers

A bit off topic, but I hope you're remembering the freedom discount with powerbulbs!

Cheers Andy

Will give them a try and see what they say

Carl:thumbup:

Don't forget you'll need some resistors in order for them to work Carl.

I've wanted to do this myself for a while. I got some but without the resistors and they didnt work

Yeah i've been looking for ones with resistors built in which i have found for Sides and possibly Stop/Tail

Carl:thumbup:

Usually it's down to the extra power in the system that takes out any weakened bulbs. Had similar on my Clio RSI years back.

Mater, where did you order your LED sidelights from and which ones did you go for?

Used these ones - SMD LED with Resistor

Tried some others that were £6.50 delivered but they just triggered the BFW so they are now illuminating the boot :D

Carl:thumbup:

Is it posible to switch off the BFW with VCDS?

Not that i have found

The pictures of those LED's from your link look rather big how do you install them? Or are they not as big as they seem?

  • Author

Not got them yet but they wont be that big.

They will only be as wide as normal W5W bulbs and maybe slightly longer

What about the 5 SMD LED ones on ebay?

The ones you have, the light doesnt seem to face forwards?

i got the 5 LED ones to start with but as they have no resistor in they just trigger the BFW

They work for about 5 seconds then just switch off.

Because of the way the sidelight sits in a reflector type housing they work just fine.

What about other lights like indicators and rears?

Or you not ventured there yet?

Still searching for ones that will work without the need for me to solder in resistors.

If i can find some that have them built in then i'll be laughing and ill post them on here

  • 1 month later...

Any update?

Can we expect a GB for these?

If i can find some that will work then yes i'll organise a group buy.

At the moment the only ones i can find that work are for Sidelights

But i'm going to have a bit more of a harder look once i get back from working away

Carl

Did you get the side light ones working?

I like the look of those - are they legal?

Good question :)

I know there are laws regards the brightness of headlights - I wasn't sure if there was anything about side-lights.

The light these LED's put out is not really anything more than the standard bulbs.

The advantage of these being that they should have a much longer life and they are also pure white as opposed to the usual yellow of standard bulbs.

So in answer to your question - not sure of actual legality.

However I'd be extremely surprised if they were a problem - they are just side-lights at the end of the day.

The only time they will be illegal is if they are Blue

They are perfectly fine and i've been working with the Fuhrer lately and one of them even commented on mine saying he liked the look better than normal yellowish side lights so i can't see it being a problem

@ Gadgetman - yes the ones i linked work perfectly fine
