How I think you could probably get 60mpg in a Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

1. Drive Fabia vRS for 18 months, get used to the torque shove, start to think it feels slow.

2. Have the vRS break down for a week or so, and go to drive a 1.9SDI classic Fabia for that week.

3. Get used to the 65mpg that the SDI does completely effortlessly

4. Get used to the 0-60 time of infinity seconds, decide that planting the foot in to the floor makes no difference, and saunter to 60 at a leisurely pace

5. Get so used to driving really slowly and not accelerating anywhere quickly that you start to allow 10 minutes extra to get anywhere.

== i am currently at this stage and think the rest might happen! ==

6. Return to vrs and drive it like you drove the SDI (ie accelerate at the same rates you did in the SDI, go the same speeds you did in the SDI).

I bet at stage #6 you average over 60 to the gallon in the vrs ;)

Oh, boy do I miss my decent brakes and tyres :(

Or just drive slowly to begin with ! :D

Dull though. :(

Ye I seen 72mpg on a 20mile trip most borin drive of my life lmao

the best average I've seen in the Ibiza is 54.4mpg. tried the same trip at 60 instead of 70 and it just took longer

I can easily see 68mpg on pootle along the coast road, And a run into town see's me in the mid 50's.

Though that doesn't last too long as i get bored really quickly.

i got 52mpg this morning on the 14 mile drive home from the g/f's, thats one of the best ive ever had

I'm happy with 40+ during the week (including 'sh.. I'm late!' starts from all traffic lights, and 'progressive' motorway driving). A long journey will easily see 50+, even when full.

I did consider putting the Dragon on '1' last time we went away - that would have probably got me 60+ but then taking andypandypoos's point even further, I thought, 'If I'm not driving for fun and I'm not relaxing, I might as well be working. Therefore, if every wasted minute of holiday is worth xxp, am I really saving money?'

The difference between cost and value! ;)

I got 67mpg on the way back from south queensferry the other night, travelled along what we call the coast road and at one point it hit 68mpg until I got stuck in traffic.

How hard do you have to drive to get 40mpg out of a hole tank?

Even when I "write off" a tank for fun I still get 43mpg. When I'm trying for miles I can get maybe 52mpg.

This is all worked out by resetting the trip when I fill up and driving down to 10 miles left in tank. Then adding that 10 to the final mile total and dividing by 10. I'm sure this isn't accurate but I think it's a closer figure than the computer suggests sometimes..

Not very... I averaged 40mpg over 15,000 miles of not driving hard at all :thumbdwn:

And you fill up till it stops, reset trip, drive, fill up to it stops, then take the miles driven and the litres put in. That's as accurate as you can be really. I have no idea what adding 10 would do, aside from screwing the figures somewhat.

Yep, after a blast a few weeks ago in the Furby, about an hour and a halfs drive, my average was sitting at 32mpg.

Still bl00dy brilliant considering the abuse it was taking !

My computer at the minuite has never gone over 35?? But i have only had the car a week so the novelty is still there. A good tip for brilliant MPG is push the car everywhere you go.

If you check this out, add the mile covered, cost per litre of fuel, it calculates the mpg for you.

Get about 330 per tank, but mostly drive in traffic, did make Leeds to Newquay on one tank.

MPG Calculator

Would actually have to agree with you on that (though it's my own system).. as the miles left in tank figure never truly tallys with how many miles you cover.. If it says 20 and you travel 5 it can show 10! The worse adding that final 10 can do is add 1 mpg though on the 10 gallon tank divide.

I'll give the system you suggested a try as I'm about to fill back up anyway. Still reckon my way is closer to the reality than the computer though ;)

I used to get figures into the 60s in my Fabia vRS

I drive to work and back every day (about 60miles there and back) its mainly all 60mph a few 40 zones and a bit of dual carriageways. I manage to get over 50mpg easily and thats not really hanging around? Lowest I have ever had was 43 on the motorway and that was hammering it???

I guess the newer Fabia's seem to be slightly more efficient?

Mine was an 07 plate

60mpg pah... I managed to average over 100mpg after a 1hr30mins drive

(ok it was all down hill from Cervinia) I have a photo somewhere think it shows 105 or 110mpg.

Biggest killer of MPG in the VRS is labouring the engine in too high a gear for the road speed. Unless the road is on a slight decline, 6th gear should be reserved for 55 MPH

Weight plays a big factor as well, so chuck the passengers out

It's great fun if you drive it like a granny for a few hours, then plant your foot in 2nd to remind you that you have gotten too used to all that torque on offer.

Had a mate ask me why I went from a VW to a Skoda. One 30 to 70 demonstration later soon shut him up.

Try that in an early Fabia with the longer 6th gear !

Mine wasn't happy with anything less that 65-70mph in 6th !

Good point mate. Forgot they changed the ratio some time back.

Sometimes i do wonder if there is much difference between the PD100 and the 130.... MPG wise?

This is so true. 1 gear/10mph is a pretty decent rule of thumb in the vRS. I generally don't shift up into 6th unless I'm doing 60mph.

My car seems to like 61 mpg. I tend to vary the roads/speed quite a bit though if I'm out for a drive. I hardly ever drive in the city though (quicker to walk!), it goes down a bit then.

I only really use the car at weekends, when I'm working I drive a somewhat slow and thirsty pickup which is the total opposite to the Fabia, so adjusting from one to the other can be interesting sometimes.

I have the longer 6th gear too and it seems quite happy in 6th at 55-60 mph.
