Rear wiper weirdness

Featured Replies

I have been having fun with the rear wiper of late. It is starting to get a bit arthritic when wiping and has stuck a few times. This isn't too much of a problem as Ikeep using it so that it doesn't seize. I will eventually replace the motor when it completely dies.

The thing that is weird is that when I'm using the front wipers and then put the car into reverse the rear wiper does not activate which I'm fairly sure it used to do. The rear wiper works fine when selected on the stalk as do all other functions on there (Wiper speed, sprayers and speeds).

Is there something wrong or is this likely to be something going in the motor, or could the stalk also need replacing?

The rear wiper on mine doesn't work when reverse is selected and the front wipers are on either. I thought it was only on Fabias that this feature was fitted?

Whip the back off the motor clean out with some solvent and regrease, itll be full of compacted crap & soil.

Yep, that's the most likely cause. Eventually it'll just sieze completely.

Just take it off and throw it in the corner of the garage! 25mm rubber bung in the hole, and your done!

If you've got a hatch, the rain never touches the rear window when your driving anyway. The rear wiper in the octavia hatch causes nothing but problems. You use it once in a blue moon, and when you do the washer hose pops off, or the motor has a fit. Destroy it! Plus it looks much better with a clean bottom!

My wiper got stuck the weekend and started acting erratically, its now decided to settle back into position and working ok, but slower than normal.

Think it needs a good clean.

Might bung it up though as I hardly use it, only reason was that I parked under a tree and load of sap fell on the car. Think this was what made it get stuck in the first place, having a sticking window.

Again, Briskoda, Brilliant, all the info was available.

Mine is playing up again, along with the front this time.

Time for a good clean on both front and rear setup. Suppose its my fault for keep parking under a tree, without washing my car.

Hopefully its this, otherwise, hands in pocket job.

Well replaced mine at Skoda for £118, not messing around with a 7 year old motor for it to go again.

This will work for a time like I found, then over time will go back to being eractic.

I completley stripped mine cleaned it up and re greased. Worked great then started stopping half way across window then even came on when rear wiper turned off.

I think the culprit is water getting in from the water jets when either it runs back down the motor arm from the water jet hose or a hole inside the wiper motor asm.

Either way a bad design.

Took mine off completly now and just used said rubber bung and a spray of rain-x.

Although wiper was useful in cold mornings getting rid of the overnight mist.

I will be avoiding using the squirter that much, hopefully should increase the chance of it lasting. Main reason I wanted one is for when ice is on the window and demisted to then wipe clean. Nightmare it packing up just before winter, as I was having to get out and force the thing back into place (maybe in just lazy).

Pulled my rear out this afternoon, on pulling it away from the tailgate I got soaked with washer fluid. Was full of it.

Bushes are gone totally which could be the cause of my wiper problems, but I dont think the motor full of washer fluid helped much.

Then to move onto the fronts.

Yep I answered that question for you on your new post.

Ouch!! i just replaced mine for £28. (this was a secondhand one fitted by myself) only took 20 mins to fit.:)

£28 sounds like a good price. I could got a spare but have been bitten before with second-hand electrics on cars either not working straight away or breaking like 2 days later.

true, you do take a chance with secondhand parts, just out of curiosity what did skoda charge you labour wise to fit it?

Skoda charge £60 / £70 for the wiper motor asm so that price must be inc fitting....

Yes included fitting.

My 1998 (S-prefix) Octavia hatchback doesn't have a rear wiper. The local Skoda dealer was a bit puzzled by this but it seems that early ones don't have them.

Yes, it seems the pre-facelift MK1 had no wiper. Wish they had not added it in as it doesn't help much, but I guess people must have complained ao they added it to the spec.

It's quite sad that I know this, but when they cause so many problems you consider all the options to get rid of the thing. :(

Thanks, all, for the info above.

Our back wiper started misbehaving some time ago - I just took the fuse out.

Finally got round to taking the wiper off and did my best to clean the whole assembly up but it was just totally seized.

Gave it up as a bad job.

Tried looking for a secondhand rear motor, got all sorts of prices from 30 - 70 quid (inc delivery) then it occurred to me that there was no guarantee the replacement wasn't going to be in just as bad a state as the old one.

We haven't missed the wiper so will try just bunging it up with 1 x 'Halfords Blanking Grommets 25mm' Cat code: 208116-0. Or something.

If second hand ones are up to £70 then might as well get a new one at £70.

Looks like quite a few people have had problems. My rear wiper is quite loud when operating and seem if it struggles sometimes although it does work. When i purchased the car the rear washer jet pipe had come disconnected so i sorted that.

I did however have a problem when it would randomly start rear wiper for no reason (when turned off at the wiper stalk ) even in the summer. And now the front wipers will randomly come on whilst driving (not often but it has happened about 4-5 times) If i flick the wiper stalk over to the rear it will stop the fronts and the rears will operate. and when i flick the switch back to off it usually stops..but can take a few attempts !! anyone had similar problems

Ahh I'm so glad I removed my rear wiper arm and motor!

If you drive a hatch and your rear motor is duff, I'd recommend binning the whole system.

Yes, the rear wiper leaks water inside and fills up the gearbox which then leaks water/screenwash onto a circuit board build into the rear wiper assembly and can put the front wipers and headlamp washers on. As you can tell, I had this problem a few months back. A new rear wiper motor fixed it.

Ever since I had my Octi in Feb 03 the rear wipe judders across the screen, it is as if the blade wears out to quick. Plus I seem to have permanently blocked washer jets on the rear, which doesn't help either - any tips ?
