laptop and desktop mail syncronisation

Featured Replies

I want to able to have access to my mail boxes (Outlook Express 6) and contacts on both my laptop and desktop. Whilst at home I have my xp home laptop and xp pro desktop on the same broadband LAN so file sharing is possible.

What is the best way and how is it achieved to be able to keep both in sync at home and when I use my laptop away from home I want to be able top access all my old mail and send any new ones synconising when I return home. Never tried it before so any pointers would be useful rather than searching the net for the way forward

thanks in advance

John

i presume you could use xps built in sync feature.. altho im not to sure on the reliability of it.... theoretically, if you set your lappy to leave mail on host and then downloaded mails on the desktop then synched. you should keep all your recieved emails. :)

alternatively... doesnt xp still have that breifcase thing that noone ever uses?

EDIT: if you right click and go to new on one of the machines desktops, make a new breifcase and have a play with it :D

I would be *very* wary of using a briefcase on a database file (which is what the mail files are).

The proper solution would be to find yourself a IMAP4 server. If you can't find one, drop me a PM and I might be able to help ;)

I use briefcase to do exactly what you want to do.

Been doing it without problems for 2 years now.

As Colin says - the easiest way with Outlook Express is to edit your mail account settings, go to the advanced tab and set it to leave a copy of mail on the server (ie NOT delete mail after it has picked it up) - that way both puter's can check and pickup all your email! You will need to do this on both computers.

On the advanced tab you can also set it to automatically purge messages from the mail server after you delete them from one of your computers - whichever one you want to be the 'master'.

Hope this helps -it's easier than copying files around between machines!

Personally I use Folder Match http://www.foldermatch.com/ and Folder Clone for Backing up to a spare disk. But having said that I synch my My Documents Directories and various others between works Laptop & Home PC.

I'll have to try these tonight as laptops seem to be taking over the house at the moment thanks to the kids and the wife.

Try to use Heatsoft ADCS. From their website. ADCS is a very fast and easy-to-use Directories and Files synchronizer. It is ideal for keeping files synchronized between a desktop & laptop and is a very fast method of backing up critical directories. With ADCS you can easily see what have changed in your directories and transfer changes with single mouse click.

I've used it before and it is great.
