Gears in 07 Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Is there any way of making the gears "longer" in an 07 vRS to make them more like in an 04?? Have an 04 and an 07 and have noticed latest more revvy in all the gears. At 70mph the 04 is pulling 2000rpm and the 07 is on 2500. At 100mph the 04 is on 2500 and the 07 is on 3000. Would a remap alter this in any way and has anyone an opinion on which they prefer and for what reason? Noticed that the 07 is quite a bit faster on acceleration though, is that the reason they changed them, and do all 07 vRS Fabias have the same gearboxes?

a remap would do nothing to the speed your going at a certain rev, it would be alot of work but im sure you could change the length of the th gear, but you might as well just track down an old gearbox (like the one you own from an 04 model) and fit that in...

You would need to fit an earlier gearbox with the longer gearing.

My 04 has the shorter box, so must have been one of the 1st.

I haven't driven a longer boxed vRS but I do know that I like 70 being at 2500rpm because when I go to overtake it goes without a 2nd thought.... and I have the option to drop into 5th for an even speedier hop.

Having to drop down into 5th every time.... or build up some speed before going to overtake would just be a pain.. You may save some fuel (it can't seriously be that much, can it?) but the longer box must take a little of the excitement out of motorway driving?

March 2004 was the changeover point.

And I'm not sure you've got your comparisons right. My 2nd vRS, which had the older box, certainly pulled more than 2500 at 100mph in 6th! Based on what you're saying above, the gearing of the old box in 6th is apparently 60mph per 1000rpm!

I personally preferred the older box, but you're right - there's not really that much in it.

Mines a September 2003 car and its got the older longer golf derived box - 85mph is 2000rpm in 6th

Well that's very strange indeed, seeing as my last vRS, an October 2003, turned over 2100rpm at an indicated 80mph.

Steve

It was bang on the 2000rpm on the revcounter, but the 85mph was indicated on a satnav. My Speedo is miles out!

don't know if the ratios are actually different or not, but I've got the box out of Gary's vRS SE in my 2005 Cupra and I don't like it - feels like it's lost a bit of it's pep at motorway cruising speeds :thumbdwn:

I had a Golf TDI with the shorter gearbox and after driving the VRS with the longer box. I prefer the shorter one, makes the car more revvy.

Ratios in a Cupra TDi will be different to a Fabia vRS... not alot but a wee bit...

Err sorry to sound a bit thick here but how do you know which gearbox you have ??

My car is a 2003 53 plate but didn't have a clue they fitted two different boxe's:eek:

Yours will have the longer 6th ratio, which is the original 'box. They changed over at the end of Feb 04 IIRC.

Steve

I'd also prefer the longer ratio box, given the choice - I feel 2100rpm @ 70mph is too high, personally...

My SE sits at 2,100 at 70mph!

Thanks for all the replies re my original posting. I have to say I preferred the pre 04 box, as I do a lot of motorway work and 6th gear in my Jan 04 model is brilliant. The older model has a quieter engine aswell. I'm mystified why they ever changed the box, especially when it cuts fuel economy. Maybe I'm being too fussy and got "spoiled" by the old car but the difference when still driving both cars is stark. Has anyone reading this post ever had the later car remapped and if so what difference if any has it made to the gearing and also to the top speed???
