Daytime Running Lamps Activated

Featured Replies

Just had these done at the local dealer. I'm the first to request it and they were in considerable doubt as to what I was talking about. The salesman had told me they were the indicator bulbs but it son became evident that they were something else. The handbook reveals how to change the bulbs but does not describe what they do. The Skoda factory put me on the right track via an email.

Hope I do not regret the turn on- my SIL has just flagged me down and asked if I knew my side lights were on.....

After all the debates on this (Scandinavian lights versus North American lights versus DRLs versus DIY CFLs ... ), any chance of a picture, please? I'd love to see what it really looks like, whether it does look like your fogs have been left on. Along with enabling both rear fog lights, this is on my "to do" list as well.

Also... did you have to tell the dealer which bytes to tweak, or could they find them with the Skoda information?

Thanks!

Not very impressive. Just a 'bare' bulb outboard of the fog lamp. I had the tail lights activated as well. They seem to be the same as the normal rear lights.

Skoda knew what to activate and I did not tell them anything.

Not managed to post pictures yet. Probably could put a link to Picasa some time.

North American DRL just activates dip beam no rear lights and no side lights, also the dashboard and interior lights will not illuminate till you switch your lights to side/dip so there is no chance of driving around with just your fronts on  on a car without xenons you can turn down the brightness with vagcom too.

The north american setting doesnt light up the dashboard or interior till you switch the light switch to side or dip stopping you from forgetting when driving at night.

Unless I'm mistaken, the bulb-in-fog option would be legal in the UK because it's not actually the fog light that's lit - it's a separate bulb.

Re: Scandinavian lighting, I read somewhere that this enables the side lights, although the implication here is that it switches the low beam on, yes? Is there any setting that just turns the side lights (with or without the rear lights)?

Cheers.....

Was toying with the idea when Ben fiddled with with my cars settings at the show. Decided against them as I have auto lights anyway.

If any, I'd only go for American myself.

I just turn my headlights on and I like the additional illumination of the instrument panel; simple really.

ohps posted twice

I've got DRLs set to Scandinavian which only works when headlight switch is in 'off' position.. With Vagcom, have option to set brightness on dipped beam and if needed front fogs. I've set dipped to 32% and fogs to about 15% (so they just glow a little). Rear side sides come on, but not interior / instrument lighting.

i personally wouldnt bother fog light ones even if they DRL so many people including some plod still dont understand them and will pull you over, whilst other drivers will flash you.

Another thing with the North American lights is that I found that when you pull up the handbrake the lights turn off, and then back on again when you release it.

Why is that important when driving? :)

i did originally write that, but firefox crashed so i had to retype everything again:rotz:

also the headlight washers will not work either till you turn the light switch on.

Been running a version of the daylight running lights for a few days on the Skoda. Mine definitely has auxiliary bulbs next to the foglights. Not been flashed or pulled by the police- yet.

I can switch them off and on with the indicator stalk using the elaborate procedure in the handbook in case I do get hassle.:o

How about via the Maxidot?

Maxidot is an option , and I do not have it as far as I know. Or do I?

My computer display seems to have everything I need.

How about via the Maxidot?

I have MaxiDot and can enable/disable DRL manually in there (Setup > Lights&Vision).

Interestingly, however, the DRL function was disabled on my Elegance 1.4 TSI with xenons by design. Seems logical once these new xenons are cornering anyway (and do a 4 step bounce: down, swivel in and out, and then up).

(Though, I had my DRL enabled via VAGCom - now the xenons and the DRL both do the cornering movement.)

If you do it would be via the Maxidot's 'Set-up' menu and then be controllable under the

' Lights & Vision' sub menu.

You beat me to it.

Did the Maxidot function for your DRL only appear after your DRL were activated via VAGCOM? Mine are currently not activated and as such, do not appear in the menu.

It was already listed there under Lights&Vision, but had no effect (i.e. selecting its check box did not enable DRL at all). Since it has been enabled via VAGCom, I can turn it on/off by selecting/deselecting the check box from the MF steering-wheel.

Hope this is clear.

Strange how mine is not even listed (Facelift Elegance 1.4TSi DSG) - will have to see what effect the VAGcom has when they are eventually activated. If it remains missing in the Maxidot menu then I would have to resort to the indicator stalk control for it.

' Lights & Vision' is not an option under Set Up. So no MaxiDot then, as expected.

Thanks for the info..

Well, if it's any consolation to you, I have Maxidot but currently no DRL control under the 'Light & Vision' sub menu. So if the VAGcom activation fails to add it to the menu, I will have to control them as you do - i.e. via the indicator stalk.
