both graphics cards wont work on windows 7 but will using on board graphicss

Featured Replies

Having a nightmare with this, I have boght a new graphics cars (geforce 9400 gt super) with 512mb of memory, the thing is that when i install it into my windows 7 machine it crashes out and gives blue screen I thought maybe its the card so took my old card out of my sons machine which is also a 512mb card and thats the same blue screen just as its about top load into the windows 7 desktop. (its ok before this and i get the starting windows logo)

I have now found that when i use the onboard graphics that windows 7 will boot up and it seems that windows 7 does not like using the cards on the board.

this is the best bit...i re-installed windows vista home premium onto the affected machine and both cards work without fault  so then i re-install windows 7 and they dont work.

What can cause this as it seems to look like there may be a compatability issue with windows 7 and my 2 cards which are both PCI-Express :rotz:. Surley if they both work with vista then windows 7 should be ok.

The board i am having the issues with is (MSI K9VGM-V)

Any help would be great as so far i have swapped and changed the ram i am hoping this isnt a mother board failing but then surley i would be having the same problems with vista - its so frustrating....which i had left well alone now :D

Unless you have win7 compatable drivers, then you'll have issues

The problem i have though is that i cant boot up in safe mode with the card inserted onto the board to install the drivers, i can only boot up windows 7 using the on board graphics and i cant install the drivers without having the card istalled.

Is there a way of installing drivers without the card in the machine - cheers

This card sounds like it needs a beefy power supply, it maybe that both PC's simply cannot provide enough juice to power both the graphics card and itself. On the box their should be a list of requirements including power.

also check for motherboard bios updates... i seen other manufacturers in the past solve gfx issues with mobo bios's

Try slip streaming the drivers into your version of windows 7 then install from scratch.

How do you go about slipstreaming the drivers in, When i put the driver disc in it just says i dont have hardware that matches the software on the cd (because i havent put the card in)

I have also tried the bigger power supply in the machine that wont boot and its still the same, I have been on the MSI mainboard site and updated the bios but this was dated 2008 and the details were it resolved just a dvd drive issue.

It does seem that its when its looking for the drivers during startup or switching between on board and pci-express graphics that its tripping up, bloody thing.

Then the crappy ECS board i have works fine - thanks for the help guys

Does disabling the onboard graphics in the bios help it work?

Some dont like it unless you do.

I have tried disabling the onboard graphics and also the onboard audio but it is still the same - I just hope my motherboard manufacturer sorts this out as i feel this is where the problem is.

Thanks again

Any results on google if you search under groups?

look for a site called nlite, look for the options for slipstreaming for Vista, should be the same as 7 is based on vista. Add the graphics card drivers in then reinstall windows 7.

You've not said though, are you able to boot to safe mode with the card installed? May take a few attemps but on start up keep hitting f8, or power off a couple of times to force the "repair" option screen.

Cheers, I cant boot up in safe mode with the graphics card installed it just freezes as its loading the drivers then when i boot normal it blue screens just as its about to load into windows.

I will have a look at the site you mentioned though - cheers

As I said, it's based on Vista. It isnt Vista, so the drivers may or may not work. In your case they dont with Win7 ;)

You need compatible drivers for win7.
