Columbus Sat Nat DVD

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new Superb. I am very impressed with the car to date. However, I wish to add some POIs (speed camera locations) to the Columbus Sat Nav system for which you require the DVD disk. My local Skoda dealership states the DVD is not part of the specification of the car and there is nothing in the brouchure that indicates the new car comes with the DVD. They also state that that due to copyright infringements the local dealership can not supply a backup disk. However they do confirm that I can purchase a disk.

The dealership has also mentioned that adding POIs such as speed cameras could void the Sat Nav warranty. Is this true?

The final kick in the proverbials is the software installed is Version 3. If a new car is sold in Jul 2009 surely the car should come with the latest version. Are there major improvements with Version 4 and is this the latest version?

Given the Columbus Sat Nav is listed as £1275 in the Superb's optional extra list, I would assume the device's original operating system disk would be supplied. I would be grateful for any advice on what is my legal rights regarding the provision of the DVD and what Sat Nav software version should be fitted on a less than one month old new car.

Many thanks

There have been several threads on the Superb ll forum about adding speed camera POI's, and it's quite technical - but at the end of the day, why do you need them - if a person's licence means that much to them they wouldn't speed in the first place.

And if you don't speed, you don't need speed camera POI's - job's a good 'un

Welcome to Briskoda BTW - congratulations on your first post

Brimma: I totally agree with you about speeding. I try really hard not to do it.

Erniem: I actually showed your post to the local dealer to support my arguement and his response was as I have stated above. I am looking for a specific reference or Skoda statement as to whether the DVD is part of the Columbus system.

If you add POIs to a copy of the original DVD that should be supplied with the car, then all you're doing is playing a different DVD through the system. I can't see what that's got to do with the dealer, or how it could cause any damage whatsoever. If I were to sell or exchange my Superb, I'd simply put the original DVD back in and the system would restore itself as it was when purchased. The POIs are paid for by subscription, BTW, not pirated.

No car manufacturer is likely to sell a SatNav system with speed cameras included. Modifying a copy of the original disk is quite a technical process and even then the cameras only appear as icons - there is no audible warning of their proximity. Even so, that sounds like one huge line of BS from your dealer, who clearly knows squat about the process! :)

Ray.

As Ray says, the DVD should have been included with the car. Mine was with the manual in the glovebox and the dealer made a specific point of showing it to me on collection.

The DVD is not shipped with the car from the factory. The dealer has to order a copy for each car they sell. I'm guessing your dealer is trying to make a little bit more on the car by not supplying you with the disk.

As for the difference between the v3 and v4 disks, then there's not much in it. The maps on the v4 disk are still woefully out of date (they are from November 2007).

As the latest BMW navigation uses the same core software as the Columbus, then the Beemer mapping data is compatible. It takes a little bit of messing about, but you can make a DVD that works in the Columbus which contains the January 2009 BMW maps.

At the same time, I've also added the latest PocketGPSWorld speed camera database, as well as a load of additional POIs for Supermarkets etc.

If you want more information on this, just drop me a PM.

Bagpuss.

Are all VAG marques running such out of date sotware or is it just Skoda getting the thin end of the wedge again?

its not the software, its the map data. i have made the hybrid BMW/VAG dvd and it works fine in my columbus, with the latest data released by Navteq.

Hi Bagpus

Thank you for your response. When you say the DVD should have been included with the new car, where is this laid down? I need a suitable refernece to go back to the Skoda dealer.

Regards

I have a forwarded email from the dealer who my car came from Jewsons (Oxford) which states that the DVD comes as standard at no extra cost

Two other options to get this confirmed

1) Call Skoda UK

2) Call a dealer and ask them

:D

Why did you not order one when you ordered the car?????????,

The dealer can still fit one for you at a inflated cost or contact the company on ebay that has loads of adverts offering fully fitted units at half the dealer cost

Thanks for your info in the post.

I have finally got my hands on a navigation DVD free of charge from my supplying dealer (Hortons of Lincoln), it took some time but this is what I did for anyone who is interested:-

I wrote, emailed and phoned Hortons asking for the DVD but got no response over a 2 month period. Eventually I got a response from the General Manager saying the DVD was a cost item and if I wanted one I would have to pay for it.

Armed with the info above I emailed Skoda UK, who contacted Hortons who then contacted me to say they were ordering the DVD for me. This second process took approx 2 weeks.

It appears that the DVD is chargeable to the dealer but dealer can then get the cost refunded if it was aginst a new car.

I suggest that if you are having no luck getting a free dvd directly from your dealer go through the route I did!

I got a copy of v5 (April 2009) and updated the Columbus of my 2008/05 Superb II, which by the way in Spain, never comes with the DVD maps. I wasn't able to know my original installed version but I think it was v3. At least for Spain the difference is great. In 2 of the 3 big trips I did this summer the navigator went "offroad" because of non-documented roads.

v5 DVD ? I can't even get my local dealer to get hold of a copy of v4.

Ever feel like the poor relation when it comes to support from SUK ?

The fact is that I downloaded it from the internet.

And regarding to the dealer, I made a question 20 days ago and I'm still waiting for a reply...
