vRS or Cupra R ? ? ?

Featured Replies

Apart from the obvious, can anyone give me a list of differences between the following 3 cars:

Leon Cupra R - 210bhp

Leon Cupra R - 225bhp

Octavia 1 vRS - 180bhp

Is there actually any difference between the two leons? or is it just a fiddle with the ECU?

Reason being, i'm trying to convice someone not to get the leon, and get the vRS:thumbup: but i gotta be honest, im finding it difficult!!

Both the Leon's will have the bigger K04 turbo, the vRS gets the K03s.

Between the Leon's... I think it's ECU. They map to the same anyway so it can't be much!

The earlier Leon Cupra R's had 210 but the later ones had 224, I think it's due to a slightly different map.

They also did just a 20vT cupra which is 180bhp same as the vRS.

The Cupra R is a better car than the vRS but looks a bit too boy-racer IMHO... also will be more expensive to buy and insure, and doesn't have the boot space of the vRS.

It's all down to practicality if you ask me. Even e the 180bhp cupra feels faster than my Octy vRS estate and has better handling out of the box too. However, the boot manages to be very small compared to the Octy and the cabin feels pretty cramped by comparison too.

I chose the Octy because I got 80% of the performance with a hell of a lot more practicality. Who knows though, maybe my RARB will bring the handling up to scratch too when it turns up!

Did I mention that I ordered a RARB today and am pretty excited about it?

Cheers,

iep

Cheers for the quick replies!

So in addition to my original post, how easy/expensive is it to install a KO4 on a vRS? how would it affect clutch/gearbox etc...?

Its a bit of a ballache to be honest.

As well as the turbo and the manifold you need the MAF from an S3 or Cupra, possibly fuel rail too and other bits, and a FMIC. And even with a decent remap that set-up is only going to be capable of 260 bhp.

Most of the members on here with heavily modified vRS's have skipped the K04 and gone straight on to a GT28 or similar big turbo.

Well, i have a mk1 vRS, and the mrs has a 225BHP mk1 Cupra R.

Best comparison i can think of, is the vRS is an AMG Merc, and the Cupra is a //M BMW.

One is for getting from A to B comfortably quick (vRS), the other is to get from A to B, via C/D/E with a huge great smile on your face.

Both very good cars, but it depends what your main criteria is!

The Leon also looks like a Rover 25 from the side!

It would have to be the cupra. The brakes are awesome! 4 pot Brembos I think! (someone will no doubt correct me if im wrong)

Trying to pursuade someone to get the Octy is making me think twice about swapping my own vRS. Totally agree that the LCR looks too boy-racer, but all the stuff i want to do to my car, i could just put towards an LCR and not have to change anything on it. Realistically on my budget i wouldn't get my octy even close to 225bhp. hmmmm!

But you'd then want to map the Cupra etc... lol

Surely the Cupra cant be that much better than the vRS?

As said above, almost everything people do to their Octavia's is already done with the Cupra R.

The Mrs Car started as a 225, but its got a sports exhaust, filter, and chip, and its a feckin beast. Its got to be running something like 250/260 bhp, and it feels it.

After getting out of the Cupra, the Octavia really does feel like a sensible family hatch, rather than a sports car.

6 speed box in the cupra rather than the 5spd boxin the vrs:confused:

I need to stop thinking about swapping! I do love my car, especially that you don't get the wrong sort of attention. There's not much else out there that's as stealth, maybe a T5

When I revo stage 1 mapped my 150bhp 5speed L&K it could keep up with my mates 180bhp 6speed

When I stuck the exhaust, cooled and filter n fuel regulator on and stage 2d it. It beats my mate’s 225bhp cupra r.

the skoda has a bigger boot, nicer interior, and cheaper dealer parts!!! The seats suffer from poor quality interiors well at least the 2 in my car club do. and are a lot harder to find in scrap yards.

+ skodas dont realy cut ppl up or drive like d@#ks, unless the taxis.

But leons tend to be complete and utter ******* 90% of the time.

brembos only come on the cupra r.

K04 turbo only comes on the Cupra R, the Cupra has the K03S the same as the Octavia vRS.

Have a read up on seatcupra.net for the difference between the Cupra and Cupra R.

To be fair, the price difference between a 210 Cupra R, and a vRS is minimal, even a 225BHP is only £2k more than vRS. By the time you've spent money on a vRS, with Stage 2, Suspension/Brake upgrades, etc, your already at the same cost. At which point im sure a Cupra R is cheaper to insure. So really your only advantages are a bigger boot, and a skoda badge.

As i said before, if performance matters, the Cupra R is a far better choice. If your purely looking for a comfy fast family car, get a vRS.

my opinion exactly.

seat is too much "plastic is fantastic" and "sporty" member of VAG family.

skoda is better all around car.

As someone that owns and drives both i thought i'd add my thoughts....

My Cupra R is a fun, fast nutty car (even before the mods :D). yes, the plastic makes subtle noises and its suspension is a little on the hard side, but at the same time its not a crusing car. its fantastic on a track day, and on corners it doesn't feel like i'm kissing the pavements!!

The VRs has the potential to be near on the same. its comfy, softer on the roads, slightly roomier and has a bigger boot. it will be eventually chipped, a change of brakes and possibly exhaust system, but it still won't be the sporty Cupra.

In short, it depends what they're going to use the car for, family comfort or a bit of a bumpy ride.

I guess it does just come down to personal preference. I think whatever car i have i'm going to want more power. Im just greedy :D. Maybe I need to save up for an old RS6 . Off topic but i think the taxi companies in Bournemouth got a multi-buy discount on skoda octavias!! Seriously i've never seen a taxi in Bournemouth that isnt a skoda!
