Your favourite Nikon lens?

Featured Replies

Being a Nikon user and enthusiast, I am always interested to hear from others about the system. I think Nikon lenses from the first SLR types from 1959 to those of today are all capable of excellent results.

I think that my favourite one though is the 45mm f/2.8 P. This little lens not only has wonderful colour, but sharpness and contrast that are up there with the best. It was the FM3a 'kit lens' and can still be had new from Grays of Westminster for £299. It is a Tessar formula (four elements) and displays almost zero distortion.

I attach a few photos taken with this lens. Tell me about your favourite and share some pics if you can.

Lovely images in your post:thumbup: Nice idea for a thread too.

I've just picked up a 55mm f2.8 AIS Micro which i'm really pleased with so far, love the build quality of these older lenses. I haven't had a chance to try it out much, I've been laid up with Swine Flu but here's one from the garden yesterday. Shot handheld in a force nine gale:rotz:

My favourite of all lenses so far is my 70-200mm f2.8. This lens really does live on my camera and it's not often I take it off. Here's two images taken with it.

I think the little 50mm f1.8 is defo worth a mention. Small, light and cheap as chips at less than £100 quid. Great IQ too.

Last but defo not least is the 24-70mm f2.8. If I do get around to removing the 70-200 this is the one I normally reach for. Amazing IQ and build quality.

Sorry, I know you said "favourite lens" but I love them all:O:D

Hmm tough one.

Chris has already beaten me to it, plus he mentioned three so that's just not fair :grumpy:

But until I get out more with the Nik 24-70/2.8, my glass lust is with the 85mm f/1.4. Oldish design, no servo focus, but a bokeh to die for :o Also, it's relatively short for it's aperture so it's good to take photos without appearing as a papparazzo ;)

edit: thought it'd be nice to have some of people we know too - taken at the national meet

Standard kit lens 18-55mm supplied with Nikon D40, because it's the only I have.

@Xavier,

Nice set of images. Don't get upset because I posted more than one lens. I saw that whacking great tele you got to play with on your holidays, now that wasn't fair :P:D:rofl:

The 85mm f1.4 Cream Machine:drool:

I've got to get me one of those:cool:

You mean this one? :D :D :D

To be fair, it's a monster to handle. Note my feeble attempt at a "tripod" with my right leg at right angles in an attempt to get some stability :o

Problem with lenses like these is you need to spend another grand in decent tripod + wimberley to get the best out of them, especially if you're technique isn't 100% spot on, which is my case (bad technique that is :D)

But the cream machine is much more affordable, a lot easier to use and a hell of a lot more practical. Stealth tactics are great with it too  - use it in bars with low light without flash

sorry, I think I've posted this before :o :

Go on, you know you want one

Oh man, behave yourself. That's another £900 for the cream machine:rotz: Stop it, just stop it:D Nice pic by the way, I love those available light shots:thumbup:

That tele looks awesome. I know what you mean about Tripod price, I was looking into those a while back. I've already outgrown my one (camera and lens to heavy). As you say, they are really expensive, especially with a decent head:eek:

I'll just keep saving:(

Thanks for the input!

Well I have a new favourite - my new lens - the 180mm f2.8 ED. Colour, bokeh and contrast to sell the cat for!

Yup. I finally found you the other day, and was going to respond to your witty comment  but I've completely forgotten :o

Did you see Nikkor AIS's old Ai-S collection

Whoa:eek: That's a nice capture, lovely colours:thumbup:

The 50mm F/1.8AF is a great lens. It doesn't auto focus on my D40 but you get used to manual focusing. The price does seem to have shot up though, they were around £50 - £65 but are now over £100 for some reason.

I have to apologise in advance, but talking of manual focus....

Another vote for the 50mm 1.8, really the sharpest per £ that i can find. Makes you work a bit harder as it's a prime but I think thats part of the fun
