Service Costs

Could one of our Fabia owners have a look at the Service Schedule for their car and try and spot why the Fabia 1.9D's 60K service is so expensive? Ta.

Who makes these things up? Why is a 60K service so expensive? Is that because it is the last service they are getting out of you due to the warranty expiring?

I'll have a look at my service manual when I go home tonight. If my 60K service is going to be over a grand, then they're definitely going to have to keep the car in payment!

Hmm..if that's off Marlborough Skoda's webpage, they do charge London prices! ;)

Even so, you'd think the engine would be the same in both the Fabia and Octavia diesel,

and there wouldn't be 400 quidsworth of non-engine related stuff that would need servicing!

Doesn't the 60k service give you all new filters and a new timing chain/belt as well?

That said, for the equivalent full service on my Astra I paid about 90 quid...

Claybank have one of those "fixed price servicing" boards up, don't they? Horner's have

the same thing, and I don't recall being shocked at any of the prices on either.

I guess they're more likely to price competitively if there are other dealers within the

area, and Manchester seems to have quite a number!

When I was thinking about buying a Fabia Tdi, I remember seeing a menu price for a 60k service of about

Lest any of our members who use Marlborough Skoda are busy investigating how to run a Skoda and avoid bankruptcy, that dealer does operate a Club Skoda programme - details here - which offers members a 30% discount on labour charges against normal retail rates, a 10% discount on parts and accessories, and a free annual MOT test - all for a one-off joining fee of

Are you sitting comfortably, Mr Devon Utopia, Matthew etc ?!

Are you quite sure :(

RE Audi labour prices , I see in EVO's fast fleet , they had to service their RS6 this month. They used Autohaus Audi of Northampton who charge

My last new Audi was one of the first with variable servicing and the dealer wasn't really sure about the ins and outs (they'd only had one memo from VAG at the time).

Audi were very clever in promoting how great it was to have long intervals (Mine was up to 22k and the 1.9TDI was up to 30k!) but all they did localy was up the labour rates by

Mmmmm RS6 - I think I said that was my dream weekday car in a recent five dream cars thread. I wonder how easy it would be to welly that engine out to over 500HP?

Looking at Marleboroughs charges they seem to be ripping people off!, my brother has just had a 40k service on his Fabia 1.4 8V, the first he had to pay for, at Skoda dealership in Bolton and the dealer apologised that he had to charge

hmmm there seems to be alot of angry skoda owners on here not happy with skoda dealers/pricing i don't want to bore you all about what is exactly involved in a 20k service but will pick up on a few points as regards to the brakes you check them all yes you can see the pads on the front (and on the rear if fitted) but you can't see the inner pad so you have to remove all wheels then there's the widely common problem of the pads stick in the calipers (due to all the muck on the road these days) so you have to take pads out of caliper and re-grease. back brakes are as front but if they have rear drums you have to remove drums clean, check and adjust brakes ( by the way correct procedure for adjusting rear brakes is to slacken off handbrake cables so you have to strip out centre console as well) so just attending to the brakes will take apprpx 1 hr. the usual oil+filter change checking levels pressure adjustments etc 0.5-0.75 hrs . then you have changing the pollen filter and cleaning out plenum chamber requires removing both wiper arms + skuttle panels another 10-15 mins or so. as a rule a 20k service will take about 1.5-2.5 hours. but when you look at the prices of servicing of your cars you are forgetting another part overheads does anyone actually know how much it takes to run a dealership these days. you have a 5051 diagnostic machine 15k 4 wheel alignment set 10k dealer managment computer system 19k

Big K - perhaps you can enlighten us as to what constitutes the eleven hundred pounds worth of work in the Fabia TDi 60K service then? Always prepared to see the other side of the story but that one's hard to swallow...

When my Octy comes back from its 40 K service tomorrow I'll whip a front wheel off and see if the pads look as if they've been disturbed too. Thanks for that bit of info.

My wife's Fiesta went for a service recently and the one thing I was looking forward to when it came back was an adjusted handbrake since you have to have the lever practically vertical to make it engage. Was it adjusted? Was it heck?!

 K.

Over the last 5 years, nay 3 years we have seen a change in the UK car market. Self servicing is becoming almost impossible, technology wise.

Technology has an inflated cost, which as you say is taken on the chin as setup costs. This is where the little figures of 1million comes from for a new dealership setup. 1million investment / 2k profit of car sale (if that high for the had nosed bartaring folk) is an awefull lot of car sales.

So as I'm sure has been the scene in many a comedy show, cost of one thing goes up so does another, that goes up so does another. It's all getting a little bit daft, (that comment aimed at more than dealers btw). I see no reason why we need so many dealers located in regions, I have 8 or 9 dealers within a 40 minute drive. Now is it me or would there not be some benefit in having a focusing of this effort.

It will never happen, much like my national one way system or colour coded cars based on power, ie get out of the way of a black one, cause it's going to eat your green one alive, ho hum, rest easy K. I think this is inflamed by marlbroughs pricing, the normal price I hope is a little less at a regional dealer over that of a capital one....eek waffle waffle, bye.

your postings here are not as numerous as from some, but when but when you do post it's always a good one!

I for one accept the points you make and will think a little more about the background costs of running a dealership. From my own point of view the prices of regular servicing are not something I have been too concerned about. My gripe, or support for others, is more focused on the point you make about paying for 'expertise'. I hope you would accept that the owner of a car just delivered from a dealership with a bulb missing might question the expertise applied to his car's 'pdi'. We go to the dealership to 'buy' his expertise, (also to comply with warrenty terms) I think there are some examples quoted which question the experise as seen by the customer. Also, to make best use of the technicians expertise and all the money invested in them dealerships have to be 'well run' I think there is some evidence to suggest communication and organizational skills are sometimes lacking. That's what sets the customer off on a rant....

One point we must all accept, the dealer is in business to make money. Providing he gives good value and satisfies his customers needs then there is nothing wrong with him wanting to make money. All of us who work in the private sector receive our salaries as a function of our employer running a profitable business. Like it or not profit is what makes the world go around.

With the benefit of your knowledge can you shed any light on the

My dealer is of the 'small/family run' type , altho it only became a Skoda dealership when the Felicia was released in the UK (was and still is the local Colt/mitsu garage since 1978) I have to say I will miss the service at these style of dealers if they are all replaced by the huge city based corporate jobs , where you are a number in a file , not a customer you bump into on the local high st.
