Hybrid KKK results

Featured Replies

Hi all

There are a few on here who wanted me to give some feedback on my KKK Hybrid project, as there are a few wanting to do it themselves.

So here it is...............

I got my KKK from a friend who had an Ibiza FR that was hybrid with a PD150 after being 6 weeks old. The turbo was only on the car for 7K.

Took the Turbo to Turbo Technics in Northampton, they said they would have a look over the Turbo and get back to me on what could be done. A few days later they called back and said a hybrid was possible and it could be built to take around 2Bar of boost and with the correct mapping could see between 200Bhp and 220Bhp and between 340lb/ft or 380lb/ft torque. Rough cost was going to be around £450. So I said to go ahead with it.....

While this was done I set about getting the other bits done and had the following completed:

Cambelt

waterpump

oil and filter change

dogbone polly filled

clutch (sachs, didn't need a DMF at the time and will have a new one when I have the LSD done)

FMIC

312 brakes from a Octavia with OMP pads (highly recommend the pads)

I got the turbo back from Turbo technics and it was fitted by myself and a friend and i ran it on standard for a few hundred miles to let it settle in.

the front mount and the clutch and brake pads were done with the assistance of Alex (ninja_alex) and I would like to say a massive thank you, all the work was done to a high standard and for a good price

Well i got everything on all together with the last thing being the FMIC, i then went for the remapp. I spoke to the specialist at Turbo Technics and he said that Performance - Torque, who i wanted to use, would be fine for the map. I booked in for Will to map it.

Arrived at Performance - Torque and Will set about mapping after asking what was recommended by Turbo Technics. The map took a few hours but the result was amazing...... 208bhp and 365lb/ft, and it drives so nice, the power delivery is brilliant and smooth. so a massive thanks to Will.

my general feedback to people thinking of doing it is go for it......... altogether cost me about £1800 for all my bits and having friends that i paid to help me fit everything.

here are a few pics.

Looks like a decent remap, judging by that curve, especially the before and after. Any idea what the slight dip is at the top? I imagine the difference between 205 & 200 can't be felt on the road. :)

Good results Phil, glad to hear all went well and you're happy

I did also wonder about the dip....

Steve

Great little post!

Ive had to leave the car on the slow burner for awhile, while i tend to other areas of my life. But when i pick it back up and sort the "looks" I'll be having some thoughts about this department.

Those figures for that cash are definitely food for thought! ;)

I've just done my front mount, and I'm really wanting to get this done too, seems like and affordable way to go.

only problem is the 3weeks to get the turbo done like you told me via pm. I 'll need to try and source a turbo. If anyone knows of any good ones going PM me!!

Allan

Look's promising Phil. My Turbo got picked up on Tuesday and is at Turbo Technics getting (I hope) exactly the same done. I've been quoted a 5day turn-around though...

Thanks for the feedback guys

Mine took a little longer due to them having loads of work at the time, and some complications with the guy doing it. but as i was in no rush it was no bother.

I am not sure what the drop is on the mapping but you don’t feel it on the road it just drives brilliantly. It is exactly what i wanted, not stupid fast but just about right.

Keez - good to hear you gone for turbo technics as well. Let me know how you get on with it.

Without wanting to 'stir' waves the usuable powerband there is really really short, even for a diesel surely? The torque graph however looks spot on, and no dobut why you dont feel the 5bhp 'dip' due to torque levels still be over 300lb.ft. But you can still see the reflection in the dip of torque too. Still alot more power than a standard KKK with a remap, infact at near on 5k you have similar power to one peaking on a remap alone!

Thanks for posting the graph, your cars awesome!

The more graphs I see on here the more I want all this power!

I keep finding the standard peaks and then moving across to see what the mapped cars doing and I'm always just amazed.. vice verse is true, I'll find the peak amount of a standard car on a mapped cars graph to see how much lower it is on the rpm.

Peak torque on a standard car is at 1900/2000 isn't it though? Yours was higher before the map aswell, is that because of the turbo and all the other parts?

Rob :D

T-Spark - I can see what your saying but realisticly you can never get your toe down before 2K as you get flywheel judder and personaly i always change at 4 - 4.5K so the car is realy tuned to my driving style. Maybe when I get my meth injction I might see about getting the map adjusted to run a little more power for longer over the rev range, but for now I am very happy.

reflex - Thanks for the comments mate, my standard grapth might not be the best sort of comparrision as it differs so much from a normal standard, when my standard run was done I had everything on the car and Will at performance - torque was impressed with how smoot and well the standard torque was held. and as i said in the top post it is not that expensive if your willing to get stuck in yourslef :)

Still running a DMF? It is impressive that you can 'safely' get 200bhp or so out of the KKK turbo mate no doubt about it. Here is the graph of my Ibiza running a KKK turbo with a 'extreme' map on it

Stage2.jpg

Both our torque graphs are very, very similar but the bhp isnt so, obv. the peak is on your side but your graph just seems 'sharp'

Phil, when I see you on the grid roads in MK, i will know to move my 'standard' vRS out of the way

T.Spark - That is a lot of power for a standard KKK, bet that didn't last long.!!! well im happy with it and like I said I may get it adjusted when I have the meth done

Rob - I will carefull not to cover you in smoke as I drive past......Havent seen you on BucksVag yet.

The meth should work a treat matey :) You have the added bonus of the KKK spoiling up earlier than the hybrid PD150's thats for sure. It was alot of power, and it lasted around 4 months and lots of miles before I took it out and put in the hybrid I have now. Wasnt running OTT boost either from memory.

After going out is phils car the other day i think its awsome although it was wet and couldnt exactly open the taps up much but still felt alot lot quicker now i want mine done :(

That's a mighty fine increase in performance.

Has the insurance premium changed much?

What's the MPG like?

Hi Phil

Thanks for the great feedback. That dip only appears due to me running the car in 3rd gear, if you go to another dyno and get them to do a 4th gear run (more engine load) you will its perfectly smooth, as it is on the road.

Enjoy the p-torque remap

Drop me an e-mail, we can offer a kit to get your power up

Any reason for the 3rd gear power run? Why would this cause the dip? Also doesnt lower geared runs alter the 'stats' at all?

Hi Greg

3rd gear run was used due to heat soak after a few hours logging and mapping. Normally a power run would be carried out in 4th gear, and would actually achieve slightly higher figures on the dyno.

Good to hear, so basically if the car was thrown on the dyno again just for the usual RR day style 2/3 runs it *should* even produce more power than 208bhp, impressive stuff indeed

Hi

Yes, but not too much more.... :)

How is torque changed with a 3rd gear run? sounds daft but i thought a car had more power in the lower gears so thats why 4th was used as a medium?

Hi

4th gear increases load so boost is acheived faster, and held a little longer

So its to get a smoother graph basically from that understanding? So as you said 3rd has that dip due to being 3rd, but 4th wouldnt have had it? Sounds daft but why not use 5th or top gear on a run then as again wouldnt that be smoother still? Or is it a case of that would be silly speeds for the dyno to hold it in place/wouldnt hit 5k for example of a diesel in top gear?
