Nikon D60..... Thoughts

Featured Replies

Well as you may have seen in previous posts i was all set to go for a Canon 1000d later this year. I've today received my long service award catalogue from work, as i celebrate 20 years service on the 4th September, and have found i could have a Nikon D60 for the princely some of £29.

How does the D60 compare against the 1000d??? Are they pretty much the same sort of spec??? Or does one out do the other???

I know it's a bargain at £29 but if it's nowhere near as good as the Canon i'd probably go for the Canon and use my service award points towards something else.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave.

I've found a couple of comparison reviews of the two together and there really isn't much in them is there..... So how about thoughts on each of them from people who own them etc.....

 At £29, if you don't buy it, can I offer you £30 and get it instead? :D

What is there to lose at £29 anyway? Or are there some strings attached with such an insanely good deal?

Anyhow, back to your question, I don't know much about the Canon 1000d, but the D60 is pretty good starter camera. It doesn't have a screw drive in the body so you wouldn't be able to autofocus non AF-S lenses (AF-S will autofocus, AF ones won't).

Have a read through a couple of reviews, and if you get the chance, go to a shop and have a play / feel ( ) with both to see which fits your hands better.

Basically i get a catalogue to look through and the items have a points value instead of a price.... The D60 is 4290 points and i have 4000 to play with. Extra points can be bought for 10p per point so the D60 works out at £29.

Hi Dave - like Xav says, it's a good starter D-SLR. Is there anything else in the catalogue available, in the same sector?

Hi Steve,

There are three dSLR's in the catalogue as follows.......

Sony A350 (with 18-70mm lens) - £80

Nikon D60 (with 18-55mm lens) - £29

Nikon D90 (with 18-105mm lens) - £411

As i say i was all set to go for the Canon EOS 1000d at around £350 but if the D60 is pretty much the same camera then i would probably go for that for £29. Then sell my two existing lenses i would have used with the Canon and buy a couple of second hand lenses for the Nikon and still have spent less than the £350 or so i would have spent getting the Canon.

Cheers

Dave.

That makes sense mate - I'd go for it

Steve

Sell the lenses and put the extra cash toward the D90 :D

Cheers for the input guys.....

It looks like the option of paying £29 for the D60 and selling my old Canon lenses and buying a couple of second hand ones for the Nikon is the best option.

Before i go for it i'm gonna head out this evening and try and find somewhere that has the D60 available to have a hold of and play with etc....

The mrs is happy cos she doesn't have to buy me the SLR for christmas now. :D

Cheers

Dave.

Best idea that Dave; go and have a play in Jessops or something :)

No brainer for that money:thumbup:

I bought the D40 for my Dad last Christmas. He loves it, I've used it a couple of times and find it a lovely little DSLR. I can only imagine the D60 being just as good if not better with it's extra pixels and features.

Dave, I'd be really really careful with such a statement. OK, it may not be on an SLR, but you'll be on your knees for some more lenses :D

Been and had a play with a D60 today in Jessops. I do prefer it when compared to the EOS1000d.

What i didn't realise though was that the D60 is now discontinued, to be replaced by the new D3000. I'd seen a few things about the D3000 but didn't realise it was the D60 that it was replacing.

I'm gonna give the service award people a ring on Monday as it does say in the catalogue that if items aren't available then they will be replaced with an equivalent or better item. Obviously i want to know what will be the replacement item if their supplier has no stock left of the D60. I'm just trying to think how to word it to them as if i knew i would get a D3000 instead i'd probably hang around quite a bit to try and make sure they have no D60's left etc....

Just when i thought i'd got my mind made up this happens. I've had a look at a preview of the D3000 and notice it has a few new / better facilities than the D60 (Larger screen, Better AF etc...) so would really prefer the D3000 over the D60 now!!!

I'll see what they say on Monday and take it from there.

Cheers

Dave.

To be honest the tech doesn't move that fast on DSLR's, the D60 will be a decent bet, although as noted before doesn't have in body focus motor so older AF lenses won't Auto-Focus, that shouldn't be a problem as the third party lens makers have recognised the market and offer lenses with their own focus motors.

I've a D70S and if you search on flickr there are some excellent photos with that camera, so until my skills outgrow it I will continue with upgrading lenses and keep the body, albeit its "only" 6MP

The smaller screen isn't an issue i suppose. I think the thing that has me worried about the D60 is that it only has 3 point AF compared to 7 point on the 1000d and 11 point on the new D3000 replacement.

Anyone a little more in the know who can say how much of a downside / handicap this is to the D60???

Sorry to keep asking the questions. :o

Cheers

Dave.

Ok just to hopefully put a stop to this one..... I've been discussing with the mrs and i'm gonna forget about the D60. After speaking to someone the mrs works with who has a D90, and has nothing but good things to say about it, i'm gonna go for the D90 from the long service award catalogue and then put around £450 on top of my points. I would hope to get around the £80 mark for the couple of Canon lenses i will sell too. This way i'm still spending about the same as i was going to anyway but i'm getting an £800 camera instead of an entry level EOS1000d or D3000 etc...

Having owned & used an SLR before (Canon EOS 1000fn) i'd rather spend roughly the same money and go for the D90 which i would hope to reach MY potential with but not the camera's full potential rather than go for an entry level camera and reach IT'S full potential before i reach my own...... If that makes sense.

So anyone interested in a couple Canon lenses (Canon 35-80mm ultrasonic & Canon 70-200mm) look out for a 'for sale' thread soon. :)

Cheers

Dave.

A wise choice :P

I think so too.... I've posted the paper work off today so will keep my fingers crossed it arrives before we go away on holiday three weeks today. ;)

Have to have a look on ebay now for a nicely priced 55-200mm Nikkor lens for when it arrives. Unfortunately i just missed out on one a couple of days ago when i was still undecided as to what i was going for body wise.

Have fun :P

Tried that a couple of times but always get a message saying that registration has been disabled so assumed it was a defunct forum etc.... Do you need to be invited to join?

Also noticed you can only view the for sale section after being a member for 6 months and having over 300 posts!!!

Cheers

Dave.

Sorry if it was from that link it will be because it is my account :o Try this one and register it is free, the link was to the lens lust forums. Yes you do have to be a member of longer standing to buy and sell, I presume they have had trouble before.

No it wasn't your link. They just seem to have stopped anyone signing up to the forum over the last few days at least.

I'll keep trying to join up though.

I'll second or third nikoncafe. They're a very friendly bunch too - you don't get shot down in flames for asking stuff. But then again, it's mainly US-based so they are kind and forgiving by nature

The buy and sell now requires 300 posts. But don't worry, I'm way over it already. Having said that, you're not missing a great deal because whilst there is some cracking gear up for grabs, again, it's mostly in the US and makes buying stuff and shipping over to the uk too problematic to be worthwhile. A lot of sellers there say CONUS anyway :) It used to be open, but following a problem end of last year, they stopped it altogether then reintroduced it but with the acceptance criteria.

Oh, and for your finance's sake (and marriage if applicable), DO NOT CLICK on the Lens Lust section ;)

edit: Good choice going for the D90. It really offers pro-like performance (but with consumer controls) - you get the screw drive motor for focusing old lenses and the high ISO Performance is very very good (on par with D300) :D

Managed to sign up tonight so just waiting for my account to be activated..... Same name on there as on here.

I'm just on the lookout for a 55-200mm VR lens now to go with the kit lens. I'm watching a few on the bay. Although i've seen a few online suppliers selling them new for £160.
