Fabia brake/accelerator safety link?

Featured Replies

On all VAG diesels I've come across it's impossible to accelerate at the same time as braking. I know this sounds bizarre but if you have the engine running while stationary in neutral, hold the brake pedal down with your left foot and push the accelerator with your right foot the revs will not rise. This is supposed to be a safety feature so that anyone with big feet can't get into trouble if braking in an emergency. This feature was present on a previous Octavia and is on my Passat. It's also on a friend's Seat. However, my wife's Fabia pdi 100bhp doesn't behave like this. It's possible to rev the engine even with the brake pedal depressed.

I'd be grateful if other members could let me know how their Fabia's 'behave'. It's no big deal but I'd like to check it out. Thanks in advance.

Mine is the same - it's due to the fly by wire engine throttle.

Kiss goodbye to left foot braking.

Thanks, but the Fabia is fly by wire and you can accelerate with the brake pedal depressed but my Passat is also fly by wire and you can't accelerate with the brake pedal depressed! Confused - I am?!

I'll check my '01 PD100 tomorrow if I remember, but I believe I've tried left foot braking and it wasn't quite as useful as in the Scooby ;)

it is to do with with euopean emmissions regulations also works with the clutch pedal as to why the 100pd doesn't do it possibly a faulty brake light switch ps. why would you want to have the throttle and brake at the same time?

Brake doesn't stop revs rising in my PD100 either.... :D

Left foot braking in ours definitely cuts the engine if your moving but not when stationary! So maybe it's also linked to the speedo or ABS sensors?

I think it must be linked to speed / abs sensors because if you gently pull the handbrake up whilst moving, you get a rather loud beep! Of course, it doesn't been when you're stationary

If you brake first and then put on acc then it might still accerate, but not the other way round ie steady gas, nowbrakeand whilst brake on try to accerate. It will die.

I had the octy did bigtime from lights at the weekend.

Dumped the clutch at silly revs ASP light came on and then felt like there was no power at all. Soon sorted itself out and a manged to leave the Maxi standing.

Thanks for above - it didn't die using your method!

Thanks to everyone else for comments; I think it's time to ignore the 'problem' before obsession sets in as I can't see that it's important.

Weird because both my tdi and the swmbo's 1.4 16v auto both die!

IIRC its a failsafe feature - if the fly by wire throttle fails such as you get full or constant power setting (its just a potentiometer and they can fail) then dabbing the brakes resets power demand to zero. Panic over.

Interestingly, I tried this again this morning. Stuck the car in neutral, pushed the brake down hard and pushed the accelerator. The revs went up to about 1300rpm and then would go no further, even with the accelerator right to the floor. I'm not sure if the tuning box was causing it not to go down to idle, or whether, I could have pushed the brake pedal down a bit more ;)
