No second gear

Featured Replies

My y reg Fabia (1.4) suddenly will not engage in second gear. There is a rattling noise before it happens and then it just wil not go into second gear. The other gears work fine.

Anybody come across this before?

Hello and welcome.

I had a spell in my old Fabia which was similar, at one point I could only get 4th gear. Dealer thought it was the clutch but it was fine. Got them eventually to adjust the gear linkage cables and replace the reversing switch, hey presto problem solved. Might be the same on yours, try a search or post your query in the Fabia section to get a better response. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Hello and welcome to Briskoda

Welcome - can you just not get it into second when stationary, or does it not go in when rolling? For a time, my wife's car wouldn't go into 1st, but then if it was put into 2nd and THEN into 1st, it worked. Something wasn't aligning quite right. As has been suggested, it was a linkage and is much better after adjustment. Hope you get it sorted soon! :)

Thanks for the reply. No it won't go into 2nd when stationery or rolling. When I go into 2nd and let the clutch out it sounds like its the clutch but obviously it works fine in the other gears.

Hiya.

Best case - gear linkage needs adjusting, and maybe gearbox oil needs changing.

Worst case - 2nd gear is FUBAR.

Intermediate case - I can't think of one other than possibly the reversing light switch.
