Blackberry 8900 curve or nokia n97?

Featured Replies

I dont rate blackberrys for personal users. They're great in the corp arena, where users need their corp mail on the go, but I dont think they're as good to the personal user.

Many networks also charge extra, due to RM licensing, to use a blackberry on their network. usually £10 per month.

I made the enormous mistake and opted for a BB Storm - biggest piece of s*** I have ever had. Vodafone were/are totally useless when it came/comes to customer support and tried every trick in the book NOT to send me a new'un, that one was just as crap by the way

I'll never have another BB again and I have cancelled both Vodafone accounts and gone elsewhere. Enjoy my handsets Mazuma

I had problems with my storm when i first got it, after a few software updates it's now the best phone i've ever had!

Regarding the browser on the 8900 download the Opera Mini web browser, it's TONS better than the native blackberry browser.

Instead of it trying to download ALL the images and the text it goes through the Opera servers and everything is scaled down for mobile use so an average page takes seconds to load not minutes!

Go to mini.opera.com/ on your phone and download it

Good constructive feedback, we got a good feel for the issues

I was just about to suggest this...

Does anyone know if Opera connects using the Blackberry internet plan or will it incur extra fee's browsing using Opera? I'm sure i've read somewhere that if you use Opera it won't be within the BB data plan thats included with my vodafone package........

I'd like to give it a go but i don't want to be paying twice...

Cheers

The BlackBerry internet plan or BIS (BlackBerry internet Service) is an alternative to a normal data plan.

The reason you have to have the BIS is so the phone can be registered with the RIM servers for use with the BlackBerry messenger and so that PIN e-mails and messages can be delivered to your phone.

So in answer to your question ALL data goes through the BIS, there is no alternative.

So don't worry ;)

I've been using Opera and my bills come in as expected.

Excellent.... I will give Opera a go then. Thinking about it, i had opera on the n95 - maybe thats why the BB8900's browser seems so slow to me now.... ah well, i will soon see..... Anyway, as it goes, i take back all the bad things i have said about the 8900....... (apart from the browser) Today, i finally solved my email issues and all my email accounts are finally up and running! :)

Funny :thumbdwn:

Unresponsive screen, particularly in the corners, the click function gets sticky thanks to crap getting behind the screen.

Touch screen generally inaccurate

Regular white screening requiring the battery pull method.

Frequent locking up of the home page when asked to rotate with the handset

Very poor signal/no signal

Calls randomly disconnecting/going silent

Battery dead by the end of the day despite sitting on a car charger for 4 hours and a wall charger the night before.

USB charge port worked loose after 3 weeks.

Front buttons worked loose/fell off thanks to the case

3-4 minute boot up time after the battery pull

Phone would mute/end call/go to speaker phone when held against your face

Mic covered up when held normally by a left handed user on a call.

Glad to see the back of the poxy thing.

Sounds like almost all the things you've described there have been fixed by the latest release of the OS apart from the hardware problems you've suggested.

If you had yours from new it would have been running OS .75, it's recently been updates to build .173 and is miles better. Remember it's a first generation phone in comparison to the iPhone that is now on it's 3rd generation so is in no way fair to compare them.

The new storm 2 that is due for release soon is miles ahead of the storm 1. The screen is all one part and has no cracks for things to get in, also instead of having 1 button behind the screen for the clicking action it now has 4 in each corner to allow multiple clicking, compare it to pressing a sponge if you will.

OS 5.0 is due for release in the next few months and will defiantly be something to rival the iPhones UI

Thats better. If you had posted that in the first place you would have made a much better point.

Your issues are VERY untypical of Blackberry. Many people have different opinions on them but having used and supported all the products extensively I think they are great. I have had 4 over the last 8 years and work with them every day for hours either on the phone or emailing, we sell thousands of them and rarely see half of these issues and most of the others could have been sorted with a software update.

There is a saying in the Mobile retail trade - Iphone for show, Blackberry for a Pro

Mind you soinds like you have a right lemon there and your best well shot of it.
