256mm conversion thread

Featured Replies

Well, as I'm going through this at the moment (fingers crossed all on by saturday) I thought I would start a little thread to document it. The brakes are rear brakes, I believe from an octy vRS. Came from ninja_alex and appears to be the complete changeover setup.

Started off with a good degrease, and thought white spirit was probably the best solution. The calipers were quite grubby but came quite clean once I'd scrubbed them and dried them off. Still looked kinda blacky, but then they weren't going to stay that way. ;)

Then it was on to the Hammerite. After not finding a "smooth red" I decided to risk a tin of garage door paint that was "poppy red". The colour on the lid looked a close enough match for Brembo red to me. And this is after one coat, still wet. I am going to need to do 3 coats I reckon, so one coat each day of this week until Friday. Hoping the match is quite good, but as long as they're a good "red" I am happy.

Hopefully will be able to actually have a handbrake capable of locking up the back wheels. Handling tracks are no fun if you can't do a spot of handbrake action. The one at Hullavington was quite disappointing for this reason! Has EBC drilled/grooved discs too, and yellow pads, so hopefully will be good.

Looking tidy :)

Discs and Pads look like new too hey Jason. Looking now at the price of discs and pads, they were a steal!

Yeah - plenty of meat left on both.

As a question though, I don't see how they bolt on the beam. I saw a thread in the calipers which looked like it was new (shiny still), so is this how they attach? Hopefully it will be obvious when it comes to actually doing the swap.

Should bolt on same as std calipers?

Having never done it, I'm not sure. I will PM Ross about it.

This is the view from the back of the calipers, with a close-up of said bolt holes. I have just twigged the holes are probably for the brake lines. :D

devontopia,

I have got a octavia vRS beam (complete with the 256 brakes) in my garage at the moment which I am going to eventually fit my mk4 Golf 150pd. If you need any photos or measurements let me know.

After re-reading the for sale post, I am sure the carriers are still attached to the calipers. But I'm not mechanically clued up on braking parts - I prefer to leave braking work to professionals as they're quire important to my safety.

The carriers are still attached to your calipers, on your last photo they are the piece at the bottom resting on the bubblewrap. Here are some pictures of the calipers and carriers attached to the beam:

That's great, thanks.

PS: I am tittering at the "murder scene" look of the back of the brakes! Not that it matters back there as long as the front is good.

LOL, not pretty is it!

Since those photos I have removed all the brakes etc. Currently stripping the green paint from the carriers and calipers to repaint in satin black, the green paint is taking some shifting!

they fit no problem i done it mths ago...only choice is trimming the edge of the standard backing plates or fitting bigger mk4 golf ones but bolt holes need widening to fit..

I might run with no backing plate at all, but will figure that one out when fitting. Might just take a grinder to wherever needs removing, or just not bother with it.

I just trimmed the lip off mine, bloody mooing now like its an Octavia, fecking things..lol

Is the plate needed? I guess it just stops little stones getting stuck down there?

Its a heat shield, the clue is in the name.

Fitted my old ones to an MPi today :)

  • Author

Never knew it was a heat shield. :o Just thought it was a plate to protect it from stones, etc. :D Grinded it will be then.

Well, something is amiss as the carrier is out by about 1cm in both depth and width when offered up to the rear brake carrier bolt holes. :(

Hopefully resolved a.s.a.p.

What the 256 carrier holes don't line up with the fabia hub holes?

Nope - Quite possible this is "one of those 256mm setups that don't fit"

Might be easier for me to just get the right carriers brand new from Skoda/Seat/VW, than try and find a different complete setup.

Audi S3 rears look like one of those setups that won't work.

Will confirm later.

The shots below are with the carrier pressed against the disc too, so for leeway the gap is bigger still. Will get there in the end though.

Just measured my mk1 Octavia vRS 256 carriers, the hole centres where they mount to the hub measures 90mm and the thickness of the carrier where those holes are is 20mm.

I know that if you use the 256 brakes from a 4wd model on the back of a 2wd Golf then you need to put 6mm spacers between the hub and the carrier. If you use 256 brakes from a 2wd car then the spacers aren't needed.

If you need any more measurements let me know.

Also it might be worth talking to DaveB1970 on the uk-mkivs forum as he is is the master of brakes conversions.
