Ok, so i'm embarrassed, I know how to burn data CD's etc, but now i've down loaded the .rar files, what do I do with them? What is this ISO image and what do I need software wise? Is it a CD or a DVD

Any one got a step by step guide on what to do suitable for a numpty like me!?

Awesome!

Cheers Mate,

I'll be onto it tomorrow!

Fingers x'd i dont stuff it up as usual!

All this talk about about Colombus has got me excited.

I have been advised that to fit a VW RNS510 ( 2009 model for £600) in an Octavia II ) will require something being flashed!

I have an vague idea what they mean but could someone, Stu perhaps, explain what they mean and is it worth the trouble. I contemplate fiiting VW because at this price it could be a bargain.

Which to me, reads: Even though I've been a member longer than most of you mere n00bs who've contributed to this thread & tons other Columbus threads (that I can't be bothered reading), I only value one persons opinion out of almost 50,000 members!

...guess we'll have to wait for Stu to enlighten us all!

No offence intended. I would welcome any advice from any of the 50,000 members.

It look's to me that simbo99's advice was to the read the existing threads

Just remember that the lighting on the VW unit will be red - which will look a little out of place amongst the green lights everywhere else.

When I was looking for a Columbus I was tempted by the VW unit (as the Skoda units are rarer).

But in the end I knew the red lighting would drive me crazy.

You will not have to Flash anything unless you all of a sudden want the Skoda Splash screen. I know people who have put VW units in other cars and they are all fine.

You will also (as has been pointed out) have red back lighting to the controls.

Otherwise the units are identical and as long as it is coded properly with VCDS say for Maxidot,MFSW etc then you will have no problems

If you get it and get stuck im always happy to help and if you are Near folkestone can code it for you.

I know what he's on about. He's talking about flashing the 1TO vw unit into a Skoda 1Z0. It will then boot with the correct screen etc, but the buttons will still be green.

EDIT - Beaten to it :)

Having the Touareg rearview mirror with red ambiente leds and the RNS510 with red lit buttons it is not that bad as said here.

I personally like the black with red (=premium) skin of the RNS more than the green skoda skin.

Hi ,

I have a factory fitted Columbus to my new Octavia (new shape 59 plate).

I am tempted to upgrade, do I stand a good chance of success ? (I don't have the blue tooth option so that shouldn't be a problem).

Can't get into the setup menu to check existing firmware/hardware, guess it needs enabling via VAG-COM first..

And lets be honest.

If the upgrade does go wrong just take your car back and say:

"Me Gov? Never touched a thing"

I am tempted to upgrade, do I stand a good chance of success ?
I'd say yes - providing you make the changes required for Maxidot & MFSW...
Mine's going to Poland on Monday / Tuesday. He will attempt to fix it properly, and if he can't, he'll upgrade it to 2664 and I won't be able to upgrade it again without bricking it.

Sorry to say that mine is unrepairable apparently. Hope yours can be repaired....

Oh great :( . Really sorry to hear that.

I hope you can recoupe some thing from selling it as spare parts - Screen, Case, Controlknobs etc

Hmm, still thinking what to do. I could try and source a new motherboard or sell it as it (I can get it working - eventually - but without HDD).

magic62 - would you be so kind as to give us a quick summary in english of what's happening on the german rns510 forum with the gateway errors and the guy replacing his hard disk?

I guess what you really want is to find one at scrappy in a car that's had a major prang so some how the screen's been broken - you've got the HDD so the state of that doesn't matter...

Maxidot and MFSW work great at the moment, I take it need to get someone with VAG-COM to make some changes after upgrade ?

Why does black with red = premium ? Am I missing something ? :o

If you've got a facelift Octavia with the white dials, then either would look good, but IMO the green skoda skin is much better suited to the green dials. Depends whether you like the interior of your car to look like a Christmas tree I suppose ;)

I am sure I read somewhere the latest Columbus did not need the file name changes..

Can you re-load the firmware update if I find mine is one of the 'new' ones ?

Yes.
