Oil Cooler for a VRS?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Im looking to fit an oil cooler to my VRS. First off have any of you done this? I've fitted Mocal Oil coolers to a number of Vauxhalls in the past but they all have just a take off/sandwich plate that fits inbetween the oil filter (which is external) and the oil pump. As my VRS has a internal style filter I was wondering how easy, or if at all possible it is to fit a cooler to the Oil pump or system? Anyone know of any off the shelf bolt on kits for the PD engine?

Cheers for any advice or help.

Neil

The vRS has already got one. It's a water cooled one at the bottom of the oil filter casing.

I don't know if there would be any point in an external air-oil cooler, the existing one is perfectly good.

pretty sure Jason has a mocal oil cooler in his fabia

:)

Why do you want to fit an oil cooler ?

Can't think of an oil cooler having benefits to any diesel engine as they tend to run much cooler than a petrol engined car.

Should only be done if you are running hotter due to increased power. Over cooling the oil is a bad thing. Increased drag due to viscosity of cooler oil = less MPG. Increase in oil pressure at high revs can blow seals and gaskets. Very tight tolerances in modern engines, and they are designed to run at a specific oil temperature.

I need an external oil cooler as im regulary seeing 130degrees of oil temp in the sump on trackdays!!! And I believe Diesels heat the oil hotter than petrols don't they? I read somewhere that oil temp at the base of the piston can be up to 315 degrees and on a petrol is more like 160degrees... here we go found it..see link Motor oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I will send a message to Jason if you reckon he's got one but in the meantime has anyone else fitted one?

Cheers,

Neil

Is there a log on VAGCOM that shows real-time oil temperature?

That's good for track days, but what about when you are not going round that those temperatures, it will run cooler and end up doing what Moggy said.

I'm sure they have tested the oils to cope with things like this, hence the existing oil cooler to cope with the higher temps experienced at the top piston rings in a standard engine.

How often do you use it on track days and is your engine standard?

Yea they do hhave them, the oil does get hot near the pistons so it helps.

The exhaust gasses are cooler from a Derv than a petrol, but I can't see the actual engine temps being much different, they all seem to run at 90 degrees plus as this is the optimim temperature for efficiency.

(I once heard that the VAG 1.9 diesel engines were the most thermodynamically efficient ever made - probably not now tho')

I own the car now, and am getting a bit paranoid about the oil temp situation.

It was on track yesterday, and it hit 130, so I backed off............

Is the temp probe in the right place? It's in the sump nut..................Maybe it could be relocated to an oil filter sandwhich plate.............

What's the standing working temp for oil? 90 degrees celsius?
