Featured Replies

I'm going to be cheacking my rear pads this week on my octy vrs. Will this work to rewind the pads/

DISC PAD BRAKE REWIND TOOL / PISTON CALIPER TOOL NEW on eBay (end time 24-Sep-09 10:46:48 BST)

Also what is the minimum thickness for the rear pads before they need replacing?

Hi gord

Last things first, I would 3 to 4mm minimum thickness, but I do beleive you don't need a rewind tool for the rears (well not for a mk1) but might have changed on mk2.

But the wind back tools I have used for the front don't look anything like that, but sounds very cheap @ £5.90, but the best bit on the advert is:

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT HAVE A LIST OF THE CARS THAT THIS ITEM FITS.

IT HAS ONLY EVER FAILED TO FIT A JAPANESE 1970 CAR SO FAR.

It says they DO TAKE RETURNS, not DO NOT.

No idea if it will work. Don't those things have to push in as well as turn the piston?

The rears on the MK2 do have to be turned and pushed in otherwise you will do damage to the piston.

I've always used a large screwdriver that's got a square section shaft to wind in rear pistons on my cars.

It works pretty well and doesn't cost me anything extra.

How about a clamp

A G clamp and a pair of stilsons. Job done.

Have used one before on a old Peugeot 405 and it did the job but it wasnt easy, would say you'll be best off spending £20 or £30 and getting the ones availble at halfords. See this Link

Thanks everyone,I will check the pads at the weekend:thumbup:

Just replaced pads all round on mine & I had to get a rewind tool for the rear calipers, as I could not get the piston to go back any other way.

Not sure but think the calipers are the same/similar on the mk 1 & mk 2 but don't quote me as I could be wrong.:o

PS don't forget to take some brake fluid out of the resevoir, or crack the bleed nipple when winding the piston back in as the resevoir will overflow.

by the way the rewind tool you have a link to isn't the one you need, it has to wind the piston back & turn it at the same time & it needs a lot of pressure.

you want the one that works like a wind in ram with a plate in the end to fit the piston.

That looks like mine. I've not used it on my Tavia but it worked on my wife's A3.

Yeah thats like the one in the link I posted. Get it from Halfrauds, it may be a couple of quid more expensive but at least you can easily take it back if wrong.
