Modified car insurance - who's best?

Featured Replies

im in WA and Sky wouldnt touch me either

Brentacre, Chris Knott and Adrian Flux are the only insurance companies I've spoken to this year who understand modifications in any way.

Bell wouldnt touch me as soon as I mentioned an owners club , and the woman p!ssed me off because she started lecturing me about what I do with my car. I bought it, it's up to me what I do with it despite your company policy. :@

Greenlight insured my Ibiza for less than I was paying for my Focus and will replace mods like for like

Went with Adrian Flux in the end.

Mods declared, fully comp + all the trimmings for less than I've been paying with Esure, when I had no mods!

Happy with that, and a pleasure dealing with them too. Cheers for the help guys.

I really do not want to cause an arguement but we have got a bit fed up ourselves of not being able to quote in the 'WA' area and the constant negative feedback this gives us.

This morning I took it upon myself to email my schemes manager who works very closely with our insurance underwriters to see if we can lift the exclusion for the area and at least restrict it so we can pick up some of the lower risk customers. An email was duly sent onto to our main insurance underwriter and the reply is as following, word for word.

Funny you should say that, I am doing tons of postcode work at the moment in fact I ’m seeing postcodes in my sleep!!

WA is a funny one it is quite close to Manchester and is either Hell, or places like Altringham that are quite affluent. We have not done a great deal there in the last 4 years but the bit we have done has not been good, so we have now excluded it from all schemes.

We are also getting quite a bit of info on fraudulent activity and WA is on the list of hot spots.

Regards

Pity he can't spell Altrincham correctly if he's done so much work on postcodes, but hey ho :)

So your causing all the problems, probably changing cars ever few months they think your ringing them.:D

I'm off to Spain...

i found swinton specialist to be the cheapest the last 2 years running,i tend to switch between flux and swinton but tbh i find flux a pita to deal with so if they can't save me plenty i stick with swinton

I'm with Noel Dazely.

im with this company and they are ace:thumbup: and just 5 mins away lol

beat every other company i went for all mods declared:thumbup:

So the shortlist then for those of us who want a bit more from an insurance company and wish to declare mods, is:

Brentacre

Adrian Flux / HIC

Noel Gazely

Greenlight

Chris Knott

and Sky if you don't live in a WA postcode.

That about the size of it? Have I missed anybody awesome?

Didn't even know there was a specialist bit of Swinton!

Will remember that one :)

Yep, not a bad list to be getting on with. I'd probably knock the postcode bit off for Sky and us WA people, as some of the others can be postcode sensitive too :)

So I'd just say, try each company and see.

Cool. Thanks Steve. The postcode thing is alien to me, because I live in Cornwall

I'll make some calls and see what happens. Perhaps we should sticky a list of modified companies for people to try? I'm sure this gets asked a lot...

Not a bad idea. It's certainly worth doing because we're discussing 'specialist' insurers for modified vehicles. If we were just trying to cover general insurers, I reckon we'd be here all day :)

I have renewed with site sponsor Sky again. After doing a trawl of the comparision engine sites, to give me an idea, I tried the usual performance specialists , ie Greenlight, Flux (who didn't call back) and also Chris Knott this time. However Direct Line were still the cheapest for me in a low risk PE post code. I change my car midway during the policy so expected the quotes to be less than the ST due to the VRS being a group 14 as opposed to 17.

I had my previous Focus ST remapped, and have been contemplating getting my PD 170 VRS done, which Sky did for no extra and they were prepared to match my best quote with remap, so got my business.

The companies on the comparision engine's came in lower, but only after you expanded the explanation did you find rediculous 600 quid odd excess , no NCD protection and so on,

IMHO, a good broker should always be able to at least match any of the big name companies and maybe throw in something extra, providing your not in a statistically high risk area or a TWOC'ing drunk driver in a 1.1 saxo with a drainpipe lashed under your rear bumper.

I did not renew my insurance with Brentacre....£113.00 cheaper with Chris Knott insurance :)

May be different for Skoda, but Keith Michaels, Greenlight and A-Plan have always been good at quoting for my modified scooby trackday car. The mods for that are pretty extensive (exhaust, suspension, brakes, injectors, turbo etc)

Not heard of that first company, but yes - the other two I always give them an opportunity to quote.

I just got quoted £900 for my Octy TDI VRS 07 plate from Adrian Flux, thought thats a bit steep, was only paying £425 on my Leon Cupra TDI (im 27, 6yrs no claims, no points, no claims convictions etc) anyway got a quote for £480 from Aviva in the end (courtesy car, 250 excess, legal cover, protected NCB), anyway rang flux back up, they said theyd match it but it would cost me £70 'admin fee' for basically changing there records and sending me a new cover note, told em to shove it in the end, so much for loyalty, i always thought flux were a good company but theyve went right down in my opinion (plus i didnt get any rebate on existing insurance as apparantley once id passed my 8th month of insurance I couldnt get a rebate, even though i payed up front for 12months and am only 9months into it!!!)

Your lucky Andy as on Greenlight's website modified Skoda VRS's - both Fabia & Octavia - are listed as excluded from their cover due to "high levels on claim's involving these models"also excluded are Saxos

bizarrely i've ended up with Aviva this year, quite a bit less than CK or Flux, with remap + exhaust mod declared (I double checked the mods and ensured they are listed on the policy certificate) The price benefit may well be as a result of a "12 months for price of 10" offer though.
