What annual mileage is that , and what's the excess charge?

I saw some very tempting looking deals that turned out to be shockingly expensive once you actually used the car.

15k miles a year, GFV of £4000 ish. Not sure on the excess charges, but I had GE Money finance before and they were great to deal with :) The above figures were just after a chat on the phone, will know more when I go down there tomorrow :)

Well in the meantime, take the remap off the Pug. I'm sure that'll help the clutch :)

 just check that GE are not now Santander they really live up to their reputation, only AFTER buying petrol I discovered they had cancelled my credit card which had worked a few hours earlier, fearing some high jinks I was soon on the phone to be told " yes, we cancelled your card as it is GE which is now Santander and your new card will be with you in 14 days":mad::mad:

Are you sure the wheels are 16" ? The Pegasus ones on my previous Octy were 17''s.

Yes, Pegasus are 17" :)

Yeah, just a shame Will isn't closer really... might well do that though.

I thought the ad posted earlier referred to the Pegs being 16's...

Just get one bought Tom and get on the P-Torque remap group buy ;)

Wouldn't suprise me. I reckon 90% of the Skoda Used Car site have mistakes in the adverts... :(

Pegs are 17". The TFSI was only available on the VRS wasnt it?

As for mileage, 15K doesnt allow much business mileage. If your role comes with a car, then chances are you'll be in it driving lots of miles. MIN I would have your HP cover is 20k/year - and that's doing FA mileage for work really.

Last year I covered 50k in business only, and SWMBO covered 12k just with work and other meaningless journeys!!!

However, some are TSI, some TFSI. So what are the differences?

Not sure about the UK but in Australia if they call it a 1.8TFSI it means they haven't a clue what they are talking about:P.

1.8TSI: 4 valves, chain drive cams, FSI, turbo, NO supercharger. You can tell them because there is a screw on oil filter at the top front left of the engine.

Thanks everyone for the input!

Well I drove the ex-demo yesterday and the 1.8TSI is such a peach of an engine, excellent pull from idle, and pretty linear performance all the way to the red line! I got 36mpg on the test drive which is pretty respectable. The Pegasus and sports suspension work well, feeling very similar to the vRS suspension set up :)

However, despite being offered an excellent deal, I nipped into the carshop on the way home, and bought a 2005, D4D Toyota Avensis T4 hatchback. Very impressed with the kit, comfort and handling, just a little lacking in power, nothing a remap won't sort! - EDIT - pending finance approval.

So in short I'd wholeheartedly recommend the 1.8TSI, but head won over heart for me, and I plunged for reliability, practicaity, economy and cost... :)

Well its sooner rather than later, or I'm going to have to stump up for a clutch on the 306, I'm having to drive so carefully to stop it slipping :(

The figures so far are £1000 p/x for the 306 (which would be the whole deposit  ) and £228/month on PCP over 42 months, VERY tempting indeed!! :)

The clutch on the 306 is cheap and a doddle to do compared to other cars.

Just do the clutch and wait until the right car comes along.

Regarding the PD140, I understand you don't like the idea of a derv for your own perfectly valid reasons, but:

- 40mpg comment is rubbish, because I get over 60mpg if i'm taking it easy, mid 50's if i'm moving on a little and even going full pelt on recent autobahn runs I was getting over 40mpg (true not computer).

- Porous head was a few of the first ones and these never made it into skoda cars.

- DMF, yes there have been issues with all cars fitted with them

- Turbo, not perfect I agree but so far, touch wood.

Still the 1.8TSI is a nice engine and the chain is a good thing.

Yeah, but that still doesn't make up for the fact I hate the power delivery of the PD140, I think I'd rather get a PD105 in fairness.

If the Avensis falls through I'll be popping a clutch on the 306 for the time being. Its got 4 virtually brand new tyres, I've got enough oil and filters to last 60k miles etc...

The Avensis is such a dull car IMO.

Agreed, but handles quite nicely, built quality is first class, and its a very pleasant drive. A real head over heart purchase for sure.

Oh Tom... your going to regret buying it ;)

Oh. :(

Have you turned into a rep Tom? :D

This isn't going to be another Corsa is it?....

Meh. :P The difference now is I'm a bit of a family man, 3 kids to at least consider and still plenty of debt to pay off. If I had my way I'd be getting a new Cooper S

I'm still thinking of pulling out and keeping the 306 and putting a clutch on it for now... need to sleep on it I think.

I would. I remember reading that you were 20K odd in debt????

ish :P Worth considering I start a new job next Monday with a much better package though. I will be commuting 90 miles a day however, so comfort and economy have to be priorities, the 306 only fills one of those criteria!

Just think carefully Tom and don't go jumping into something you might regret :)

A properly clutched 306 sounds perfectly feasible in which to transport a family on occasion

Fair enough on the revised commuting mileage now, but how much is the Avensis? Something comfortable and practical and reliable for less money perhaps? Feasible?

Steve

My friend recently bought a 2005 Avensis 2.2 D4D T-Spirit which is top of the range with leather interior and electric pack, alloys etc.

I appreciate that some may feel it's a dull and boring car, but I've really been impressed with it so far. Power delivery is smooth and relatively quiet, ride quality is great and seats are really comfy. I would never have considered one in the past, but if you're after a mile muncher / motorway cruiser it really does the job well.

  • Author

Likewise, I'd have never considered an Avensis, but SWMBO's Corolla is actually pretty good, and as a dependable, practical and cheap mile muncher it takes some beating.

Wise words for sure Steve. I just wish I could get comfy properly, the seat doesn't go far enough back for my liking and even if it did theres no rake asjustment :( I know I'm a big lad, but everyone who comes in the car with me says I look like I'm driving a clown car!!

Keep (and fix) the Pug and pay off your debts IMO.

I traded an Audi A8 in for my Octy and paid off all my debts, for sure the Octy isnt half the car the A8 was but it feels bloody great to get up in a morning knowing I dont anyone a single penny!
