Brake lights question

Featured Replies

I have just found that only the high level brake light comes on when I brake, neither of the lower brake lights work. It looks like the bulbs are the wrong type (21w/5w) as the pins are offset vertically on the bulb but the holder lugs are also offset around the holder (and the holder is marked 21w/4w). Would these ever have worked? It came with a new MOT from the garage I bought it at but I now wonder if they even checked them.

Neither rear fog light works either but I have got rear side lights and rear turn indicators. Fog light bulbs are ok as I tested them by switching them for the reverse lights so must be a switch or fuse problem.

Does it sound like a trip to Halfords in the morning for some bulbs/fuses will fix it or are these symptoms of something more complicated?

(It's a base model 02 Fabia estate.)

Thanks

check bulbs should be ok but if not check fuses or relay

Just in case it's not the bulbs and fuses, which relays are the fog and brake lights on? I'll have to get a Haynes as the book in the car only has fuses and bulbs covered. Oh, and where are the relays?

Thanks

dont know tbh probably around the fuse board area

For what it's worth, I think I remember reading that some relays are under the dashboard bottom fascia on the drivers side, not that easy to get to unless you lie in footwell by the sounds of it.

According to Haynes, most relays are located on the relay plate behind the driver's side facia. To get at those first remove the driver's side lower fascia panel then remove the 2 relay plate retaining screws and lower the plate complete with relays. On some Fabia models there are additional relays at the rear of the engine compartment.

Thanks all. I've been and bought a Haynes now and a handful of bulbs. As so little was working I didn't realise the twin filament bulbs are tail and fog and the two upper lights that I took to be fog are actually the brakes. Both brake lights now work and with new bulbs in the tail lights too I have one fog light working but not both. Still that's three more lights than I started with and the important ones are working.

Thanks for your replies:thumbup:

Hi Red

Glad to hear you have the brake lights working, but just to let you know as standard only one fog lights works(UK model Offside) but I have connected a wire to the nearside and now have two working !

Radiotwo

PS you don't say what year your Fabia is, if its later than 06 don't just put a wire in as it might just need turning on with Vag-Com !

IIRC the fabia only has a drivers side fog light as std

If you want both to work you have to run a cable across to the other wiring plug:thumbup:
