Routing cables behind the HU ?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

After a bit of a delay, I now have been sent the correct Dension Gateway Canbus kit for my car. I've tested it and it works brilliantly.

One problem I have is the loom supplied with the Dension kit. Having a bit of a nightmare with the Quad lock connector from the original loom and the Dension loom. Can't seem to find anywhere to route if out of the road.

Where does this normally get routed, as it also includes the antenna connection..

Any advise appreciated as usual.

Well, went out and tried again.

Removed the lower dash on the drivers side, removed the side

panel on the centre console and routed some of the loom to the

side of the HU cage. All back together ok now.

Anybody got any tips for refitting the side panel on the centre console ?

I've got it on "good enough" but the clips towards the front of the dash are

a complete pain in the backside, so its out a little :-(

Cheers !

The clips are a pain yes.

Did you take out the top vent / storage box thing as this makes it a whole lot easier to reposition the quad lock doofer.

So that's how you do it. I got my stream out yesterday and only need it for mp3, so was planning to plug the player directly into gateway. Trouble is, the rectangular connector off the loom needs to come out somewhere to plug intothe gateway and the radio housing looks like it's solid all the way around and I don't want to start hacking holes in it. Suggestions ?

Not quite sure what you mean there tbh.

Is it the quadblock thing that normally plugs into the back of the factory stereo?

If so you are best to buy a CAN Bus to ISO adaptor cable from Skoda.

A pic of what you are wanting to do would make it easier to understand fully :)

I spent about 3 hours trying to do the same thing. No luck. Almost wept with the frustration! Its a piece of cake to fit together but the extra quadlock connector is so big it doesn't seem to fit without having to force it.

I think the glove box (strange description isn't it? I don't have any gloves that need to go in a drop-down box) needs to come out. I'm going to get a chap to do it for me. Turns out there's a Dension stockist/fitter in the next door village!

Ben will be very disappointed but I guess I'm incompetent at removing the interiors of cars.

Still not 100% sure what you are trying to do, but if it is hide the quadlock connector then the best bet is to take the vent out above the stereo. (I prise it upwards using an ice scraper - works in seconds without marking)

When this is out you can then pull the quad connector up over the top of the stereo housing and drop it to the side where the glovebox is.

Doing so allows plenty of room.

I have an aftermarket deck with 4 sets of phonos and the quadlock to ISO din adaptor all behind mine and using the above method it goes back together easily.

Yes, looks like that's the course of action for me too..getting help that is. There is also the suggestion of taking out the storage cubby above the radio to get at the quadlock but it's not the quadlock that's the problem ! It's the connector off the loom which goes in the gateway unit...get that out in to the open and then plug it into the gateway, plug in the mp3 into the gateway and job done BUT, getting it out of the side beneath the steering wheel is causing me some grief.

Sounds like it's a different thing to what I was thinking of.

Shame you aren't a bit closer to Leicester as I'd have a look at it for you.

It is a desaster if you want to put another quadlock interface cable behind the HU. Depending on how long these cables are, you might be able to pull them upon the HU. Herefore take out the cluster with the vents and the little storebox on the dashboard.

This is pretty easy to remove, you just have to go between the box and the dash underneath the vents and pop it up. Than you remove the plug of the hazard lights switch and you can put the box on the co drivers seat.

Now you can look down behind the unit and see where there is space left.

If, however, there is not enough space to hide the big quadlockplugs, than you will have to cut the side rails that hold the HU. I removed a part of the back on the left side so I could stowe away the entire cable behind the HU holder.

Swiss army knife (the sharp toothed saw) did the trick.

I removed the drivers side, side panel from the centre console (you need to remove the lower dash trim on the driver side first).

I fed the cable out of the HU cage and connected the OEM connector to the dension loom then fed it back into the HU cage again. Work fine, but its probably easier to remove the storage box above the HU, as the console side trims are a complete pain in the *** to refit properly.

Still not 100% sure what you are trying to do, but if it is hide the quadlock connector then the best bet is to take the vent out above the stereo. (I prise it upwards using an ice scraper - works in seconds without marking)

Thanks Twonks. I'm sure you're right but its a company car and, as I said, I'm not very good at removing interior trim. Frankly I don't dare.

And as for cutting the plastic as someone else suggested....AAARGH

I went with the driver's side panel as well, but upper rather than lower:

Pull out rotary light switch and silver trim behind it

Pull off matching silver trim on left of steering wheel

Pull out black plastic trim below dash pod

Unscrew dash pod at bottom, and slide credit card(s) in at top to unclip dashpod

Unplug dash pod and remove.

This reveals just enough room to pull through the OEM quadlock connector to just below/left of the steering column.

Connect the dension break-in loom, and pass the new dension quadlock back through to the radio void.

Sounds much harder than it is - takes about half an hour.

Thanks - will give it a whirl. I notice from the instructions you've also got to disconnect the CD changer. Mine's a Stream MP3 HU. Might sound really thick but how do I do that. Messing behind radios with connectors isn't my thing really but it sounded quite simple at the outset...

You shouldn't need to disconnect the CD changer as the dension break-in harness effectively re-directs the connection to it. It's actually the blue sub-subsection of the quadlock connector, but you can just leave it in place.
