W rated tyres on a Scout!?

Featured Replies

Hi folks. My parents are now the proud owners of an 08 plate Roomster Scout 1.9TDi 105. Great little car! :thumbup: But can anybody tell me why Skoda recommend W rated tyres for it? Aren't W tyres limited to about 160mph ish? Thats a bloomin quick Roomster! When it wants new tyres, would it be ok to stick slower rated tyres on it? W's are gonna be expensive. :thumbdwn:

Thanks :)

That is the problem with the 17" wheels having 205/40 17 tyres.

No, you will find that the size that are fitted (205/45r16 unless they went for the optional 17"s) will generally only be available at that rating and getting a lower rating will actually cost more. Also although these are "Speed" ratings, they will actually relate to temparature and there should be some overhead in this rating.

You can pick up decent tyres for the 16"s about £60 a corner fitted so they are very reasonable and if you drive nice you should get 30k out of a set

Falken do a V-rated 205/45/16 for about £50. However bear in mind that the rating does not relate only to speed. The 1.9TDI puts out a fair amount of torque and it may be well worth sticking with a W-rated tyre for that reason. Kumho do their KU31 in a W-rating at that size - its decent enough tyre and available for about £50, or just under £60 fitted, if you ring round.

Just had two of these fitted on my fabia vrs 205/45/16

Camskill = £105 delivered

fitted by local tyre centre for £15

seem very good value so far!

Just checked the skoda UK site. Didnt realise that you have std 16" on the scout.

The scouts here are all supplied with 17".

Good thing too given the state of our roads!

Not only that. Allthough they look the bussiness, I still think it is a bit overdone to sell cars with such a rare and expensive tyre.

I am no expert but is there not an issue with insurance if you have a chrash and have an inferior rated tyre?

That is a really good point. Technically, it would count as a mod.
