Few questions about VRS'

Featured Replies

Good afternoon

My names Jamie, I live in GB, and im new to the forum. Im looking at getting a VRS soon, ill have around 10k to play with (this includes buying the car, insurance, and what ever is left is a bonus )

I have a few questions regarding the VRS and wonder if anyone can take the time to awnser them for me, it would be appreciated :)

Firstly, when going to look at a VRS, is there any "known faults" i should look for?

2. Do they have a cup holder? If so where is it?, or if not, how do you go about fitting on?

3. The special edition, apart from the paint/leather seats, what other extras do they come with?

Most of my friends have all got Seats (leons/ibiza's mainly) and i wanted something different, but similar to them (that makes sense, in my mind :D) which is why im pointing towards a Fabia VRS.

Thanks in advance

Jamie ;)

Hello and Welcome

Common faults. Leaking rear door carrier seals, check for damp, carpets in the back. Easy fix, 20 mins a side with some Unibond 3 in 1 sealer. (DIY guide in technical section)

Front suspension. Wishbone rear bushes (consule bush) check not split or breaking up.

Drop links, check for clunks rattles on rough roads (£20 a side)

Cupholder available from dealer.

SE has rear window tints, full leather, CD Autochanger, and other things I can't remember

Make sure car has a full service history, and that the correct oil (VW 505.01) has been used at every service.

Great cars, love mine to bits.

welcome to the forum

1. known faults will be documented on here somewhere, although i've never had any issues with mine and its almost 4 years old now.

2. they have a cup holder between the front seats just behind the handbrake. you can get a dash cup holder from dealers/scrap yard etc that installs to the left of the radio (rhd models) or i believe you can get one that replaces the ashtray underneath the radio (infront of the gearstick)

dash cupholder - 6Y0862531 47H(onyx RHD approx £35 from dealer) get some radio removal keys (T30005) if you buy the dash cupholder.

the ashtray replacement cupholder - 6Y086326747H (about £5 from dealer) might struggle to fit a drive-through drink or a bottle in there due to the proximity to the underside of the heater controls!

3. if i remember correctly - red callipers instead of green, blue paint, leather seats, 6 cd-auto changer, tinted glass, and it had cruise control. limited to 1000 though so may be difficult to get hold of one of these

the vRS is a great car - you'll love it

Thanks alot to both of you, you've been a greathelp :)

1. Ahhh thats the sort of reliability i like to hear, thank you

2. Ah i see, i saw a pic where someone had that, i take it, the cup holder replaces one of the little thin panels?

3. Don't the normal VRS have cruise control? Im sure i've seen a few with them :). To be honest, i don't like the blue paint, i would rather pay less for a black VRS and get the leathers my self :)

Im looking for something that has had a FSH, and hopefully low mileage, theres one near me which is up for 6,5k, 55 plate, FSSH, rear tints, cruise control, air con, just under 20k on the clock. Is that worth it for the money?

Thanks :)

Jamie

EDIT: And thanks to you too MoggyTech, i've written them things down, and ill go over the car with a fine comb :)

saying thanks to MoggyTech

no worries.

i've added the part numbers etc now.

yeah it replaces one of the thin panels. unfortunately there isn't anyway of mounting one either side of the radio!

you can retro fit cruise control but thats approx £200-250 depending on dealer. some may have had it factory fitted as an optional extra?

mine was 1yr old when i got it from a dealership with 8,500miles on the clock and leather seats very similar to the vrs SE seats and it cost me £10,000. not too sure on the current prices of them but it'll give you a rough idea.

Hello and welcome to this forum.

Cupholders - Now you are a member on here, do a search for them, as mentoned either you can get OEM ones at the side of the radio or ones I think from a Polo which fit in the shelf. Edit: TF-VRS has now given you the info

Colour - I'm the opposite, I would have loved a blue one instead of black. Dark and Black cars look great when freshly washed, but it takes only 20 mins (less in rain or wet roads) to make it look mucky again. If you don't like blue, silver cars don't show the muck at all, or not as much. You can retro-fit leather seats, Seat Surgons of York are normally reconmended on here (approx £750 including door cards).

Cruise - Not standard on normal vRSs only Blue SEs, it was an optional extra when new or it can be retro fited if needed (again do a search on here).

Yeah ithought so, if theres one behind the handbrake and then if i get the one by the CD player, it will be suffecient ;)

Yeah i think it is an optional extra, would explain it.

Ahh the leather seats, is it only the SE's that have the seats? I've seen a few with leather seats

Jamie

To Jim

Thanks for the welcome :)

Yep, i've been doing some searching and getting some intresting results, im getting excited allready.

I dont MIND! the blue, im still thinking about it, seeing as theres a few around the 7k mark, but yeah. Im looking at getting a retro fitted dash cup :)

only the SE's were fitted with them as standard.

I believe there was an optional extra through skoda for leathers at £1000 IIRC which is why you don't see that many of them around, most of the ones you will find with leathers will be seat surgeons i would imagine

Yeah, i saw one with seat surgerons leathers, but they wanted a bit to much for a 145k VRS

Jamie

I had my vRS from 14 months old to 3.5 years, and did 30k miles, with no issues except paint peeling from the front bumper and one airvent replaced under warranty. I'd still have it now were it not that I needed an auto. They're great cars- acceptably quick, very econonomical, very practical, and still fun.

Most of the common issues are in this sticky.

As others have said, cruise sin't standard, but mine had it as a factory extra. It's cheapish to retro-fit.

Other than that, just the usual used car checks. There seem to be a dpressing amount ending up crashed, so check carefully. Get a nice one and I'll guarantee you'll like it.

All were options except on SE model which was quoted as having £1000 of extras thrown in.

Cruise

Side airbags

6 CD changer

Symphony head unit

Heated Seats

Xenon headlights with washers

ESP

Sat Nav

Electric sunroof

Metallic paint

Pearlescant paint

Passenger airbag deac switch

third rear headrest

I think that just about covers it lol

I have owned my vRS for a few months now. Only had 2 problems, 1 is the already mentioned carrier seals on rear doors leaking (apparently this affects over VAG cars) - done under warranty. 2. Problem with 1 air vent slat is broken - will get another one from a scrapyard eventually, not a big issue really.

Good luck finding a good one, £10k should get you a mint low mileage SE.

Thanks for all the help everyone, its been great!!

I've seen quite a few with them extras, now ive got them it will help me find a decent one. Seeing peoples problems has helped as it shows the reliability, which is even more encouraging!.

Id hope to get one with as many optional extras as possible, im not in any "need" to get it at the moment, im just going to take my time and see what comes up, everyones said I will know its the right car when i see it :)

They are lovely cars, im sure ill find one. Im hoping to get it to around 200 BHP with map, exhaust, hybrid, bigger intercooler etcetc, how well do these cope with the extra BHP?

Jamie

Black is deffo the colour to go for ;)

I love my vrs, the economy is fantastic

I have seen a few advertised on ebay that have nearly all the optional extras and have been reasonably cheap :D

Also, do the VRS' have a flipkey? silly little thing i know, but its one of "them things"

Jamie

Jamie

Yes :D

As Moggy has said, all vRSs have the 3 bottom flip keys. I think its only the early, pre-facelifted non vRSs that have a 2 bottom (no remote boot opener) rounder key.

If you are wanting much more power and obviously more torque, I would suggest a better clutch as a standard one may not cope.

Hello Jamie Geraghty,

Fabia VRS's around £5,000 in second-hand market, give or take condition/mileage/age.

Is your age against you for insurance, suggest you check first.

I had a 2005 Fabia VRS from new, but fortunate my age puts fully comprehensive insurance around £230 with all the extra goodies thrown in.

Quality vehicle in general, and predictable things that need fixing, but for the most it's very reliable.

Can be chipped out to varying degrees, to improve umphhh!!!

Have a search around on this site will enlighten you where/when things need fixing/repairing/ servicing etc.

Good-luck Jamie.

Just to add, cruise control can be retro fitted at my local Skoda main dealer for £140....

£10k. should buy you one off the best VRS's, even an SE with all the extras you want. If you want peice of mind the Skoda main dealers will be the place to go, have a look at Škoda and see whats available. prices have gone up recently for these models so big discounts won't be forthcoming but you can always ask for some extras or future services to be included in the deal. High milers are not a problem with the PD diesels, upto 100k miles are no problem, you should be assessing the cars service history and condition. Stone chips are common on the bonnet, front grille and front corner off wings so this is not a sign of neglect.

Tuning and adding non standard parts can add to your insurance costs dramatically especially if your young. Happy hunting and don't buy the first one you see, have a look and a drive at least 4 cars before you make up your mind.

Hello everyone, thanks for the comments :)

Ive checked insurance, and its "affordable" (won't say, leave ya to guess ;], its rather embarassing but i can pay it, i want a VRS rather alot :))

The 10k is for insurance and the car it self, ill have around 7k for the car (leave a bit extra for bits and bobs ill want to get)

I've seen ALOT of nice examples, but im not to sure whether to get modified or bog standard, id rather get standard so i can have things HOW I WANT IT, but it will be more money in the long run, but hella lot more fun :D

I do have one more question, someone reminded me of it.. What was actually changed in the facelift? sorry about all the questions :)

I mainy want to thank everyone thats posted :), i can't really list everyones names but thank you!

Jamie :)

IIRC rear lights, front grille had slanted louvres, and rear doors were "de-buttoned" on the inside. HTH
