Hi all,

You will today see some minor tweaks to the forums and the overall layout therein. We have spent a long time looking at a large number of other resource sites. We ( a select panel of members ) have been focused on information, you the reader and you as the writer.

What I hope to bring to you is the same BRISKODA you are used to, but with a much clearer layout of forums. In some cases this may initially feel like a couple more clicks to get to where you would like. But I can assure you as time goes by its' going to be a far less confusing way of storing and discussing data.

You might see some old favourite forums move up or down a few places, others might move to a whole new category, advanced driving for example, now resides in general motoring discussions.

Other forums will disappear where duplication is a frequent occurrence, the prime example of this is general maintenance, which has posts for fabia's, octavia's and more littered throughout it. Technical guides, also has been split. However first let me introduce you to communities.

Communities is something I have thought up over a while to handle the growing numbers of people who have no interest in Octavia tuning when they are a fabia owner. Similarly this is balanced by the fact that there is a large amount of overlap in the Skoda range for technical issues. The balance that I have settled on is that within each model, that is to say the Fabia as a whole, a community will build up. It would be almost impossible to construct every overlapping interest, so we've pulled it up to a common factor. So in order to create less, a few more have been added. EAch community will as time goes and the topics grow expand.

As the rest of the site updates take place I hope you will find the idea of communities grows upon you, your model of car, your important information, in your community space.

The exception to this is on matters which hold no specialisation to the model, for example styling and general car care or In car entertainment. The knowledge and advice on these topics powers forums solely to each topic. On Briskoda we've left them as separate places, where knowledge can be shared and pooled across all models, owners and communities.

I'm keeping the changes small each day, any problems or comments please do get in touch. I'd be keen to hear your thoughts, but please give it a few minutes and see how the changes work. So before posting I don't like it as that's not much use to me or you for me to improve things, thing of what it is or how it can be better?

Cheers,

Colin.

Looking forward to the changes col. :)

Hi Colin

The new forum layout looks good, but may need time to get used to. As you have said it's a few more clicks to get to the right car section, but at least you have not totally changed it so all of our saved Bookmarks/Favourites still work. I'm not so sure about splitting the 'Technical Guides' up as you may now need to check more than one section for a 'How To", again we need to get used to it.

I see you have brought back the 'Driving Routes' reviews section  although it still defaults to oldest thread first (ascending not descending). Can you please add the link to this Parts, Accessories and Gadgets Skoda Owners Reviews without me bookmarking it, it would be lost forever. I see you have added labels to the section so now you can read the differences between Off-Topic and the Roadside Hotel sections.

Sorry for picking faults, you do and have done a great job for this site, I still love it :D

thanks colin, its like going into my supermarket, everything has been moved lol.

Hi Colin looking forward to the Changes.

Just an idea - On another forum i am a Member of they have a "see replies to your posts" button.

Would that be possible on here. Sometimes im not on here to browse and i just want to check to see if someone has replied to my posts especially if i am trying to help someone and im short on time.

Also posted this in the Site Suggestions thread.

Carl:thumbup:

Carl - if you set subscription to any thread you've posted in, you'll then see when a thread has been updated if you go into Control Panel.

Will that do what you want?

Steve

Still getting some 502's :(

I don’t know what a 502 is, but I get one if I visit a public profile

Not keen on the new layout tbh. Too many clicks to get where you want too be also I'm not sure how the sponsors feel being off the main page?

I agree with this, and also find the descriptions above each section appear to make the forum very cluttered.

I may get used to it over time, but for now its put me off visiting as often.

All will be revealed soon, once all these changes have been completed by Colin then all will be revealed. The current changes being implemented will make things easier for all members once the next phase is implemented.

They are....

502 errors in the HTTP cycle

Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with the Web server:

  • Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site (the site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs).

  • Open an IP socket connection to that IP address.

  • Write an HTTP data stream through that socket.

  • Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information.

This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '502'.

Anaother thing i was wondering about...

Every model of car is preceeded by 'Skoda', but we all know the models are made by Skoda, its a Skoda forum.

I just wondered if it was needed?

Yes it is, google likes it :P

Progress, love it :)

Fair point.

The 502's are a result of the filesystem loading after a SAN crash as read only/

The forum text, that will go soon enough.

The extra clicks, think about what I said, the communities. If you own a Fabia, bookmark the fabia forum it will become your home (sort of loosely).

Partners, working on a more promininent display, activity there has not dropped off.

They are....

I was going to click the thank you button, but I am not sure what it is that I am reading. It sounds suitably impressive however

Oh go on, I will click thank you:)

Liking the new layout easy to get around
