My colleague took delivery of his Mazda 3 1.6D TS2 in Graphite Gray this morning. The car looks stunning, interior is awesome too... Any doubts I had about the bootsize and general space are now gone, its a bloody good size! :)

Roll on delivery of my Sport!!

So you got it booked in for a remap then? :D

They are a nice looking motor and I have been in the older style 2.0D sport before and was very suprised at how punchy that engine is so the 2.2 185PS must get moving pretty quick!

You got a price in mind for the 306 then?

No idea on the 306 mate. Maybe £1100? Its MOT'd til May, and just had 4 new Michellins put on...

Can't find anyone who can map them. :( TBH I need to get a few miles on it first :P

What do you mean? To return it to the std map?

???

I can't find anyone who remaps Mazdas, full stop. I think 185PS will be fine for the time being however ;)

But he is paying for the insurance, so I see less of a problem, probably need to go back to standard before it went back though.

£9/month is probably for the private use to ease taxation.

However it seems very expensive for a company car to me. I dont pay anything other than private fuel, and tax on my pay.

I thought Tom effectively got an allowance towards the insurance?

Lost now myself.

I read it to be that he's opted back into the company car scheme as he mentions company car tax, which wouldnt be applicable on an allowence as that gets taxed as normal pay.

So I dont get where all the other figures are coming from

Just have another drink, it'll all be OK

You're even confusing me!!

Option 1 - take the allowance and run my own car. Allowance is £2800pa so circa £170 per month.

Option 2 - take a company car. Any vehicle of my choice, only stipulation being on emissions of 185g CO2 or less. The car provided is fully maintained and taxed, but is self-insured, for which a rebate of up to £410pa is given.

So:

I could of had £170 cash, but instead I've chosen a car and as such

I contribute £39 a month to for the car.

I've lost £170 per month as I opted out of the cash allowance

It'll cost £47 per month in company car tax

Insurance is £520, of which I will be refunded £410, so the insurance cost to me is £110pa, which is roughly £9 a month.

Therefore the cost of the car to me is £39+£170+£47+£9 = £265 a month.

There is no fuel included, we claim mileage back at ?p a mile, which is irrelevant as we all do so few miles (maybe 30 a month?) so to save admin we have agreed on £10/month to cover mileage.

Crystal clear? :P

I'm hoping for delivery late this week or early next! The next hurdle will be getting my private plate put on it! I suppose that can wait until March when the 59 no longer looks new ;)

Enjoy the BIK on that.

I have to say it doesn't sound particularly cheap when you add in everything, although the maintained car is a nice thing.

It doesn't help that the car allowance is so poor in comparioson to the car offer, so I think you've probably done the right thing.

Agreed. I can live with £47/month BIK.

Look at it the other way round - what car could you run for £265 a month including depreciation , servicing , insurance and everything except fuel?

It wouldn't be anywhere as nice as a high spec Mazda 3

A good point well put. And its better than high, its top spec :P Only missing one option too, xenons and full leather (you can only order one or the other  ).

I'm sure the PCP payment alone would be more than £265 with a tiny deposit...

Plus I now have the 306 to sell :)

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The finance on my vRS is about that and I have to pay for insurance, fuel, maintenance, tyres, depreciation etc. on top, though my business reimburses me 40 p.p.m, which eases the pain a bit.

Going back to the remap point Tom, I thought you were talking about the 306 throughout! I didn't realise you were talking about remapping the Mazda :)

But as before - I'd leave it alone TBH.

Mazdas are a PITA to remap anyway ;)

  • Author

Yeah, I think I'll leave it be. 185PS and 400Nm should be just fine :)

Thanks metric boy! Whatever happened to BHP and lb/ft?:D

That's 182BHP and 285lb/ft then...

How many share engines with Fords?

  • Author

Meh. And its 295lbft actually :)

Still about 40lbft more and 15bhp more than the CR vRS Octy!

In the Mazda 3, just the 1.6D (PSA lump) I think. The rest are chain driven Mazda derived units. Likewise with the 6 I think.

Now I understand Tom.

The confusion arose as you're still counting the £170 - which isnt yours taking option 2. So the car's actually only costing you £95/month ;)

Best option.

One point of alarm is the insurance. Why are they insisting you insure their car? As I understand it (from your new camera thread) you'll be doing roadside stuff, which almost all insurance firms will void under their standard business use terms. Mine strictly prohibits cover for roadside maintenance/repairs (inc traffic related equipment) due to the high risks of being involved in an RTA.
