Help hybrid turbo

Featured Replies

Hi i'm after some help i have bought a hybrid turbo a Garrett Gt1749V from a turbo company. I fitted the turbo ok but when i went to drive it the car would not pull over 3k revs and popped a boost pipe off i rang the turbo company up and they told me to adjust the actuator rod as it sounded like it was overboosting which i did but the car still did not run right.

I sent the turbo back and they say all the setting are correct and they have told me my car needs to be remapped for the turbo to work properly is this correct.

Regards Paul

I dont run a hybrid but you WILL need a remap, pointless otherwise. The turbo will be producing a higher boost which the standard SMIC probably wont cope with. You will need a FMIC for a hybrid if you dont have one already.

I replaced my KKK with a non hybrid garrett and it popped all the lower boost pipes off one by one. I had to get them fixed in place perminently until i can afford to go after market. the standard pipework is very expensive to replace.

DEFINITELY remap it! Once fitted you should be "limping" that turbo to get it bedded in, and then be looking for a custom remap from somewhere, The new turbo undoubtedly has a different compressor map to a stock vnt17, so will need mapping.

Get it remapped on a rolling road and make sure its logged during the session. Some tuners will just bang an all for one stage 2 maps on the car and hope for the best by letting the limiter do the work..lol (this method sometimes works but it aint the best option imo)

The whole mapping needs to be setup to match the new turbo compressor characteristics, the injection duration/quantity needs to match the spool speed of the turbo if not you will have a huge cloud of pre boost smoke and a lean mix on full song.

Good grief! How much research did you do into this, before fitting it? Are you still running the standard side intercooler?

You can't just whack a bigger turbo on and expect the car to magically adjust :)

Steve

Dont forget the clutch (: it wont last. Might be lucky enough for it to last the mapping lol.

You shouldn't expect the car to just up and work full-throttle with the new turbo. It needs a remap to suit the turbo. Ensure that a remap deal includes map tweaks if and when you fit other upgraded items.

Ideally, you'd replace the intercooler too as the standard SMIC isn't really up to the job. I guess that with winter coming you could put that off for 6 months. If you continue to have issues with boost pipes, have a search around here as people either replace the pipes, connectors or reinforce the joints.

One thing I'd be wary of is torque. Unless you want to replace the clutch and possibly the flywheel, start off with a torque limited remap. I guessed at 270lbft for my remap and though it hasn't been near a rolling road, the clutch is still more or less in one piece after 35K.

 - on a standard clutch too? :)

Is it just me, or have the mods been applied in the wrong order??

You'll be running anything between 330-370lb/ft with a hybrid, so God help that standard clutch...

Steve

so to recap,no front mount,no uprated clutch,no re map i can see this ending in tears, you need to spend over 2k just to get this turbo to work on your car, fmic 600,clutch 1k and a custom map will be somewhere in the region of 500+ then you should be in the region of 225bhp/370ft lbs so it will go a bit

This is all without taking into consideration the need for uprated suspension/wheels/tyres/RARB (so it goes round corners with that power) and uprated 312mm brakes (so it can stop as well as it can go).

Sounds like the best advice is to remove the hybrid and put the original back, and then carry out the other necessary mods first, before fitting the hybrid back on and getting a map.

Hi the clutch has been uprated that was done a month or two ago. I should be getting a fmic next month. The exhaust has been changed to a milltek turbo back system, it also has a allard race pipe, pipercross panel filter,PD160 intake. Who would you reccomend to remap it.

Very sensible:thumbup:

There is plenty of advice on here regarding modding a VRS to run the kind of power you are thinking of, and the search button is fantastic to give you an idea of what is needed.

I don't run a VRS, so I can't give you specific advice, but I'm sure there plenty of others who will on here:cool:

I had mine mapped by Jabbasport. I'd also recommend Oscarli.

Are you running std 288mm front brakes?

Steve

jabba sport ftmfw!!!!!!!!!!!

Id recommend P-Torque, Excellent Maps, Affordable Pricing, Great after service.
