Will this be expensive????

Featured Replies

We've got the mrs' vRS booked in next week for it's 40k service along with the cambelt/water pump etc. Gonna get another problem looked at while it's there..... Just recently over the last few weeks the car has been sounding a little rough with a lumpy idle that you can feel in the car. Also when you turn the ignition off as the engine stops there are a couple of knocks as though maybe there's an issue with the engine mounts.

As i say it's gonna be checked out during it's service but wondered if it's an issue with the engine mounts is it a expensive job to fix??? It's obviously already an expensive service this time around anyway so wondered if i'm gonna have to re-mortgage the house to pay for it all.

Cheers

Dave.

hopefully it is the mounts , but from your description i'd say it was the DMF failing , this can also cause rough idle concerns

Is the DMF a big money job then???

Let's keep everything crossed that it's one of the engine mounts then. :(

DMF isn't any where near as dear as they used to be. At 40K, if it is the DMF, don't let them refit the old clutch and release bearing. The complete kit is now £400+Labour (about 4 hours). engine mounts, 1 hour job, parts are cheapish.

It may turn out to be a clogged EGR valve.

If you took it to a main dealer, expect about £200 to £250 for engine mounts (parts and labour). This is unfortunately speaking from experience :-(

If its engine mounts tho, i'd expect you to get knocking over bumps and when putting the power on/off more than at idle... i had no knocking at idle

I don't get a knocking at idle only when applying the throttle and when turning the ignition off as the engine stops. At idle its just running rough/lumpy and you can feel it through the car.

Knocking when the engine is shut-off is characteristic of DMF failure.

Got home from work this morning with the car sounding even more rough / poorly.

Well the mrs' car went in today and yes it is the DMF that's on its way out. The dealers called us to tell us and that they wanted £1070 for the DMF and clutch kit all inc. Called a local independent place up who are down the road from us and they are doing it Monday for £690 all inc.

Well at least whoever buys the car next spring will have near enough a brand new car what with it having the cambelt / water pump and new front wishbone bushes done today too.

Ouch. What exactly are the symptoms of a failing DMF?

As per my posts above.

Hmm I have similar symptoms on a 55k car. I'm sure my idle is rough even for a diesel and there is sometimes a slight clatter when you kill the ignition, most strong when engine still cold.

just a little advice that may be of use to some of you. i recently had some work done on my fabia (03 plate, 1.2 HTP 12v). had to have a new MAF sensor, new lambda sensor, new coilpack and new timing chain. all done through a VW/SKODA garage, and also had a courtesy car for the full duration. cost me absolutely nothing, as it was covered on my Tesco's Car Warranty that i purchased for £199.00 for the year. the invoice that was sent to the company (and i believe that they get a good discount too) was just short of £700.00. they have 3 levels of cover, and the top level which i had (finest) covers wear & tear! can only have it if the car is under 6 years old & less than 60k on the clock at the time of purchase, but i gotta admit - best £199 i had ever spent. the warranty is even managed on behalf of Tesco's by the same poeple that manage the skoda extended warranty i was offered at the same time.

please be advised, i am in no way endorsing this warranty - everyones position is different. but i would reccomend you have a look at the options - saved me a small fortune!

Hi Dave

Instead of having a DMF Fitted just have a standad flywheel fitted and you will not have

the problem again and a LOT cheaper

Hi,

They have stopped doing it now, Thats a shame !

Tesco Car Warranty Plan

Tesco Car Warranty Plan insures most cars under 10 years old against the cost of unexpected mechanical, electrical or electronic failures dependant on the level of cover you take out.

Please note: this product is no longer for sale to new customers. Existing customers remain unaffected.

Well, it sounded too good to be true :(

I had a cam belt changed on my 1.4 TDI at a main dealers, when starting up there was a metallic knocking noise somewhere along the bulkhead.

I discovered that one of the flexible coverings of a gear selector cable had been dislodged from it's plastic bulkhead clip, causing it to knock on the underside of the bulkhead when the engine rocked under starting conditions.

The car was returned days later where they also found that the metal bracket that secures one of the coolant (alloy) pipes to the bulkhead had been broken, they have fixed it with a jublilee clip holding the pipe to the bracket.

Sounds to me as though they had jacked the engine up too far to get a better access.

Anyway all is now quiet, but I don't really like the look of the jubilee clip.
