help! Felica 1.3 clutch/gearbox probs

Featured Replies

Hi people, Im new to skoda ownership, my first few weeks havent been a good start. I had a breakdown due to gearbox problems.

The recovery man said it could be clutch or gearbox, or both. There was no burning clutch smell. I can select gears, with difficulty, sometimes they slot into the gate, somtimes not. Certainly not with ease. When releasing the clutch the car either did nothing or sort of jolted forwards for a second or two before loosing power again, it jolted in reverse too. No major crunching noises, car does move, just, gear s are very difficult to disengage. The car feels like it is trying to pull even when the clutch is down.

I have ordered a new clutch kit anyway as there is no mention of a new one being fitted in the service history, and its done 90k. I am looking for a gearbox too will any gearbox from a 1.3 Felly fit or are they year specific?

Does this sound like clutch or gearbox, or both? I am unaware of how far I drove with this problem as I had been in 5th gear for probably an hour or so, if the clutch had gone, could I have then damaged the gearbox through continued use even though I didnt change gear?

Hiya Jonny.

This might sound like an odd sort of question, but was the gearbox making a different noise in 5th gear than from in the other 4 before the breakdown (quite possibly for several weeks)? I'm wondering if you have a well-known problem called the "5th gear nut problem". There's already lots on this if you use the site search facilities.

It was making a slight high pitched whine, I've only owned the car for 2 weeks or so, so I dont know how long it was making the noise for. Is this terminal then??

If you can, get the end cover off the 'box (see the thread elsewhere, it's fairly easy to do), and see if the big nuts on the end are loose. If it's gone far enough to mess up the gear selection, it may be too late, but tightening them up and whacking it back together to see if it will go won't cost anything (obviously doing it properly with new nuts will, but it's worth 10 minutes, surely?)

Hi. This sounds like a clutch release bearing problem. If you ordered a clutch kit it should have one in it. Gearbox quite easy to take out. if there is noise still it could be the 5th gear problem. Doing mine shortly. hope this helps,if not then sorry.
