Featured Replies

1st.Post--Hi All

Could someone please advise on the gearing of the latest Fabia vRS, for each of the 6 forward gears in MPH/1000rpm.

Apologies for the brevity of this post. I will try to do better next time.

Thanks.

Yes, I have the same problem Mike.

I have even contacted Skoda UK on this topic and they too, unbelievably, could not do a conversion to MPH/1000revs.

Most of the motoring mags. seem to be able to quote the gearing of cars tested in MPH/1000revs. but as Autocar has not carried out a full road test on the latest vRS, I cannot seem to obtain this data.

There is a way of relating the gearing figs. as found by yourself involving rolling circumference of the wheels/tyres but I cannot recall the formula.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Dave

I think it has been posted on here before, their will be someone on here that can answer it, just I'm not one of them lol

Run it up to 3000 in each gear, note the speed and divide by three (more accurate than 1000rpm, no other reason)

My vRS at idle speed chunters along happily at 30mph in 6th... :0

Oh who cares anyway!

The attached spreadsheet (which will need unzipping) may help. (based on adaadams' original posting and the Wheel & Tyre Bible).

Apologies for the long delay in responding - was off forum for a long time and only just going back through previous topics.

Thanks for the spreadsheet - that's just what's needed.

For those of you who haven't downloaded the spreadsheet the base figures for mph/1000miles in the six forward gears on standard tyres are:

53 model - 6.21,11.22,17.69,25.71,31.88,38.03

04 model - 5.67,10.24,16.14,21.88,27.15,32.51

I'm surprised that the difference is SO great - and that this fact isn't more generally known.

No wonder the emissions are significantly affected - as will mpg figures.

But acceleration should be significantly improved too... :)

Not much difference in acceleration really, something in the region of 0.1 seconds to 60 mph. What it does help with is in-gear / midrange acceleration on the motorway, but then one could simply select a lower gear in the older car anyway. I've driven both and own the 04 model and I personally prefer it to the older one, but thats just me - it just seemed slightly more urgent, even if there isnt a huge difference in reality.
