Fabia VRS Future Classic?

Featured Replies

As some of you may know, I am into classic cars. Some classics exist simply because they lasted well, and more importantly there are still plenty of spares for them. I can get just about anything for my old Moggy Traveller.

Some classics exist as they were a unique design, or did something clever, or just looked special.

So the Fabia VRS, well it looks OK, but not exactly a design classic, but it does do something very clever. It's a fairly quick hatch and it's a diesel. You get decent performance with good economy, cost peanuts to run compared to other cars with similar performance.

So, in the new World were everything seems to just get thrown away after X years, does anyone think the VRS could become a modern day classic?

The main problem I can see is spare parts.

well i'm running mine till it dies, hopefully 10 years plus

I don't think it is either common enough or iconic enough - most classics are at least one of those. I think it is most likely to be forgotten realistically!

You wouldn't think a Golf Mk1&2 or Escort Mk1's would reach CC status but they did and parts are a plenty and also a thriving specialist tuning and upgrade industry. As for a Fabia becoming a Classic, only time will tell.

but apart from only being available with a diesel engine it's doing nothing unique or clever because both the Ibiza and Polo exist. it wasn't even the first warm diesel hatch

But Escort Mk1's were famous rally cars, and have been a amateur rallier's (is that a word?) favourite ever since because of the tunability and the throw the back out handling.

The Golf MK1 was a pretty groundbraking car in it's time (do you not remember the other dross that it was up against), and again was very popular in single marque racing.

IMAO The Fabia just isn't raced enough for it to go into the mass market's affections, and whilst it is a great car, the rest of the range are just also rans in the market. Don't get me wrong, I love my Fabia, it does all I want it to do, but the VRS just doesn't stand out enough (other than ease and economy of running) to stand the test of time i think.

MGs are classics, but not because they were built well, reliable, quick with good handling and economical!

I'm not sure it'll become a classic, but It'll certainly be remembered as one of the 1st generation of vRS's.

It'll prob end up filling a gap in history not to dis similar to the 3 Cylinder Daihatsu Charade GTTi turbo! That was also a bit of a tuners favourite!

Ah, or was it the Citroen ZX Volcane TD....

worth even less! ;)

But, if you keep it long enough, it will become a classic - look at Allagros and Marinas, there is no way that they are classic. A car will achieve classic status because few have survived, not because of any perceived or real quality. All cars depreciate and arrive a t a 'least valuable' state. Then some will start to appreciate as they become rarer. In 10 - 20 years time any original Fabia will become a classic simply because there are fewer of them around, and todays yoof will remember seeing them, wanting one or their Dad had one.

However, not many people will have the time/space/patience to wait. And remember the cost of keeping a low value car on the road. When the repairs exceed the market value of the car, will it be fixed or scrapped?

In answer to the OP's question:

No. Not now. Not ever.

That is all.

...Or was it the 205 STDT (Sports Trim Diesel Turbo) basically a 205 GTI interior/bodykit & alloys with the 85bhp 1.8TD lump thrown in.

...and probably worth...................................sod all now lol

Dont think anything really modern now can become a "classic" The only car that springs to mind that has achived that is the smart roadster! Good lucks, peppy engines, lowish running costs. And axed very quickly. I would even go so far as to comment that the nissan fiagro (i think thats what its called) is as well. I also think if the 500 abarth is made in limted numbers (doubtful) that might have the makings as well.

The only recentish Classic Car that comes to mind is the Ford Escort Cosworth. A good pal of mine has one, when he's out in it (and thats rare!) he always gets loads of attention, but he also gets a few offers to buy it of him at meets. Not bad for the Mallard Green one!

But unfortunately the VRS realistically, won't be one:(

I really think it could be... I dunnno what it is but theres just something about it...

I borrowed a mates pug205 gti some years ago for a few months and had a complete blast every time I went out in it... Then I had to give it back... Was gutted... Had to go back to my big ole Saab 9000. I've been searching ever since for another car that is such a laugh to drive like that was. And I think Ive found it with the furby, I know there are other similar and quicker cars out there but theres something quirky about the vrs. The fact that its a skoda I believe is part of its quirky appeal when you consider the stereotype thats gone about for years... :D

I just laugh so hard every time I destroy a baseball capped zetec fiesta driving wally that a little bit of wee nearly comes out.... Especially when I let him catch up again just to see the look on his face when he realises its a skoda... Classic entertainment and thus...

Future classic.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
