Amazing performer...1.4TDI 80 PD!!

Now I'm not a speed freak...and I do not condone speeding, but the other day I had a very good reason to go much much faster than I normally ever do on four wheels! I won't bore you with the details...but it did involve using considerable 5th gear accelleration in my 1.4 TDI estate to avoid a tricky situation fast approaching at 95mph from behind. Crikey! I hit the deck with the throttle at 70mph (not something most of us normally have to do) and the car literally hurled itself down the motorway with a surge of power I didn't really expect, hitting 100mph very very quickly and it was still accellerating briskly at that speed. Although I did ease off at the ton! It did it all however with great calm and ease and was indeed very quiet at 100mph. Incidentally, I held that speed only for three quarters of a mile or so, enough for the situation on the road behind me to normalise. The Police later advised me I had done the right thing! This allowed them to complete their operation without hinderance, apparently! These Fabia 1.4 diesels never cease to amaze me!

Any excuse

Seriously though, makes you wonder what the 105bhp is like if you get that from the 80

And what was this police 'situation' exactly?

Sounds like a pursuit and "forceful" stop.

Brimma, the 105 bhp is faster than a speeding bullet :)

I thought that was only the 2.0L petrol

I found the little 80bhp a very eager little engine when I tried it. Liked the gruff engine note too.

Yes it was a forceful stop situation that could have been somewhat ugly if I hadn't gotten out of the way. I'm a potential witness so can't comment further just in case. However, I would add I have had a fair bit of experience at driving on public roads at very high speeds and at no time did I put anyone in danger. Before being a techy I trained Police officers to drive to Driving Class 1 certificate standard. 1.9 must go like a bullet!

its what the tdi is good for, mid range pull in a high gear! id imagine a 105 wouldnt actually be much quicker as has added weight...

All Marked On Fabia 2 Trim Level

1.4TDi - Weight 1130kg

1.9TDi - Weight 1170kg

An Extra 40 bags of sugar for an extra cylinder.... WOW :( Thats quiet alot! A Smart fortwo engine ways just under 50kg and thats a whole engine. Would love to try a 1.9 tho

I like the 1.9 TDI If I had to swop my VRS for a 105 bhp I would not feel too short changed as this version still has plenty of guts: prob the best engine but i love the triples character.

If you dont like your 1.4 then get the 1.9! The ratio's on the 1.4 might also be better suited, so again the 105bhp wont be THAT much quicker.....

No i love my 1.4, It never fails to put a smile on my face. And nah ill wait till am 21 which is soon for insurance to go down. And ive been hovering over an Auris SR180 now thats a cracking derv engine

The 1.9 is nippy, the vRS is in a different league however none of them can be called fast, not even when they are remapped.

Did try and test drive the new 180 version, however cba in the end. I doubt it will be cracking, as again weight vs power tbh.

If you want to get a decent derv again, new 335D please.... nearly kept up with me!

I quite liked the 1.4TDI I had in a courtesy car once, still a diesel, but not bad for what it was!

OMG! I'm quoting that to remember this moment... you actually semi talking kindly of a diesel! :P

Babs man did someone else write that, we will give you the chance to take it back :D

I was very impressed with the Fabia estate 1.4TDI. 5-up, boot full of sound equipment and it went! And the three cylinder diesel's sound alright! :)

It was a perfect economical load lugger - even fully loaded as above, still got 55mpg! Whereas my Fabia vRS averaged 40mpg over 9 months and 15,000 miles.

My issue is with "performance diesels" not diesels, per se! :)

Don't try and back-track now! :P

Not experienced one of these engines yet but eager to have a go. I like the 3-cyl petrol 1.2 and they make a nice noise too. Guessing the TDi 3-cyl makes a similar growly sound?

Phil

Yes, a very similar sound!

They really do mate. Amazing what taking away one cylinder does to an engine sound. My dads C1 now sounds ever so weird.

I had a 59 plate 1.4TDi as a courtesey car when the Octy was being serviced and yes its quite quick but OMG that engine noise was soooo loud i don,t think i could live with that.Mind you it had only done 25 miles but do they get more quiet as the miles go on?

It's fairly nice noise compared with the tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat you get from normal farm machinery - sorry - diesel cars
