Major bug in Snow Leopard deletes all user data

snow-leopard.png Reports have been cropping up on the Apple Support forums that users have been losing all their data due to a nasty bug in Snow Leopard, Apple's latest Operating System. Many users are reporting that all settings are being reset and most data is gone, according to iTWire.

The problem, can easily be reproduced when a user logs into the 'guest' account, either on purpose or by accident, and when they log back out of the account and back into their normal one, they find that their account has been fully reset with all data wiped and lost - the account is like a brand new one. The home directory still exists under "/Users/username" but is completely empty.

Users are reporting that the data is unrecoverable and cannot be found anywhere on the hard drive, and the only way to restore it is if the user has been performing backups on a separate hard-drive. Apparently the problem has been present since a few days after launch, as the forum post dates back to 12th September, but as of yet, Apple has been silent.

It seems the only work around at this stage is to disable the Guest account, or at least disable it and then re-enabling it so that it's a native Snow Leopard account. Another suggestion is to create a new account and enforce parental controls, if you really need a temporary account.

It's not clear how many users are affected, but it seems like any user who had Leopard before the upgrade, and had the guest account enabled are affected and are at risk.

Cheers Val

Don't have the Guest account activated on mine so shouldn't have a problem but cheers for the heads up

No it's not a flaw, it's for the users protection because apple knows best

Now that could explain something. The other day I came out of windows (loaded on my mac) and in Mac the date and time had altered, the date by about 5 years. Don't think I've lost any data though??

Goodness, they'll start getting affected by viruses next... ;)

Well if they do at least the system won't slow down when you install AV as they are soooooo much quicker than windows :P

Good to know the Leopards are still biting, despite the amount of vulnerability and snow ;)

Think I'll stick with Leopard and leave the SNOW Leopard stuck in a drift. LOL

Sounds like £25.00 pile of trouble?? will wait next full OS arrives.!!

Sorry for Apple users all the same, who have gone headlong in a whole heap of trouble, on loading-up with Snow Leopard.

Have heard a saving of as much as 7GB, using Snow Leopard, can guess why?? data going AWOL and leaving a 7GB void in its wake.?

Unfortunately this is nothing new. There was a similar situation during one of the previous upgrades. Anyone who had named their hard-drives in a certain way lost all their data.

I can't remember exactly what the problem was. It was a character that not many people would use at the start of a drive name but enough people suffered for it to cause a big stink.

Good to know the haters are still trolling... ;)

Macs suck.

This is all.
