New 4x4 Ocatvia owner - problem!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just bought my '06 Octavia 4x4 (done 115k) a few weeks ago and recently have been aware of what I presume is the turbo making a quiet kind of 'siren' sound from 1k-1.5k revs. Today when driving I've been aware of a kind of flat spot when accelerating in 2nd or 3rd gear around 2-2.5k revs. Just now when driving home up a hill in 4th gear it seemed to lose a lot of power and now won't rev over 3.5k revs in any gear.

Can I assume my turbo is dead? Is there anyway of testing it before replacing and has anyone a rough cost of replacing (In the past I've done my own servicing - is this too involved for a DIY'er?) Any recommended garages in the Rutland/Uppingham area would be appreciated.

Any advice much appreciated,

Andrew

Why turbo ??? why not fuel problem, is it a diesel ??

Sorry I didn't really give enough details did I... Its a 1.9 PD, 110bhp model.

Other things I guess it could be are MAF, fuel filter...

Im no expert, but fuel on a diesel is always suspect, dirt, air, can cause a flat spot, and that is same model as ours i think., however we have done only 50+k kms not like your 115k miles.

start wth the air and fuel filter unless you KNOW they have been recently done, after that take a look at the egr valve better to start with the cheeep stuff:)

you sure it's a mk2 with 110bhp?

You're right it must be 105bhp!

I've been reading up a lot this afternoon and it does sound a bit like the variable vanes are sticking. There's been no warning lights on the dash, but it does sound like it may be going into limp home mode.

Its been serviced around 8k miles ago. I'm sure the air filter isn't to blame as it wouldn't suddenly stop the engine reving, the diesel filter is a possibility.

How easy are the turbo's to remove on these? I read this post about removing the turbo on the TDI 110 http://briskoda.net/octavia-i/tdi-110-replacement-turbo-needed/49488/ How easy is it with the PD 105?

hi andrew,

I had a similar problem with my octavia (but the 110 non-PD model), was the variable vanes sticking, didn't have to do anything with it other than give it a good bit of welly quite often. Problem seems to be with cars having been driven gently and the vanes getting stuck on the carbon deposits.

Taking the revs high seems to work the vanes, get the turbo hot and generally give it a good clear out. My vanes haven't stuck since!

to get it out of limp mode turn the engine off and then back on again.

A very good dealer is DSG autos in Bulwick (Nottingham), a bit of a trip from Uppingham but good tram links to the city while the car gets sorted.

Chuck some fuel system cleaner in and give it some wellie - you never know it might just unstick the vanes

I've the same model and year as you and share the flat-spot at just under 2500 revs. The advice here was that it was a known fault and could be sorted by a competent Skoda garage by remapping (I think) the engine management. It was a different version of the software rather than a performance upgrade. They should know about it and it should have been fixed by now, but obviously quite a few haven't.

Mine is not a real problem so I'm waiting until its next service before getting it checked, as it is out of warranty.

Hopefully the other advice will sort the 'siren' sound.

Try the throttle body.... my 1.8T was the same...

Look on the forum for a great tutorial!

you can check for free movement without removing it with vag com the ecu will exercise the vanes (stationary) and some penetrating oil will help if it hasn't been stuck too long, however at 105K I guess the whole lot would benefit from a clean(egr- manifold- turbo ) keep us posted:) for throttle body read egr;)

Flat spot is quite common on these at 1800 - 2500 rpm mine has the same.As regard to the turbo problem i would put a fuel additive in when you top up with fuel and give it the italian tune up method ;) Sorts mine out a treat.
