Upgrading headlamp bulbs

Featured Replies

The dipped & main beam on my 04 octy vrs are very poor & id like to upgrade the bulbs, what upgraded bulbs have you fitted & have had good results with? can they be fitted without having to upgrade the wiring? i dont want burnt out relays or switches! :)

If the bulbs are the same wattage then the wiring will be fine. However, if the lights are bad, get the alignment checked first.

ive put 100w in mine no problems

Edit:

If it is reflector lamp housings we are talking about here, buy Philips Extreme Power (499) H4 Xenon Bulbs +80% and stop reading this post.

If you happen to have projector type low beams like my Octavia and Superb do, read advice below:

For a real upgrade in light output, put in 70W HID kit, though it is a bit more of work.

Here are very good and very small 70W kits:

Power HID Xenon kit 50W & 70W

At these prices, it is cheaper than lifetime of premium bulbs.

Ballasts under front bumper (they're very small, you probably could squeeze them in also under headlight), 1 hole needs to be drilled in each headlight cap, and all electrical cabling connects inside the headlight so no splices etc. Uprating fuses by 5A is nice but stock will do too. With the Superb's projector headlamp design the light output is very clean, cutoff razor sharp, and it is 4800 lumes per lamp and not the 1750 lumens that you will get from your premium or 100W bulbs. Did I mention that they do not give off the "headlight failure" warning? And pass MOT just fine.

And you can still put in an ordinary bulb (or 2) on the roadside if things go wrong.

Look forward to the "oh but these are illegal" replies....

3x more light on the road in the nicest way possible :D

PowerBulbs - Car Bulbs, Headlight Bulbs, Xenon Bulbs from Philips and Osram, including Philips Xtreme Power and Osram NightBreaker globes.

Philips X-treme Power or Osram Night Breaker bulbs are the best ones. I use the Philips with excellent results.

I'd stick to the correct wattage if I were you. I've melted a fuse box before, after fitting 80/100W bulbs in a Suzuki. Plus it's annoying for everyone else, and you don't really need them anyway.

Philips do some 90/100W 'Rally' bulbs, but I can imagine everyone hating you with 90W blasting out when you're dipped!

It's not specifically an MoT failure (I just checked) but dip filaments over 55W/12V (wattage varies for 6v and 24v systems) are illegal.
