Fabia's as big as a Mk3 Golf!

Featured Replies

This is kind of interesting. I had a feeling the Fabia was actually pretty huge, but this proves it! I found the following info for a Mk3 Golf VR6.

Kerb weight:

Fabia vRS: 1315 kg

Golf Mk3 VR6: 1270 kg

Length:

Fabia vRS: 4002 mm

Golf VR6: 4020 mm

Width (inc. mirrors):

Fabia vRS: 1893 mm

Golf VR6: 1890 mm

Height:

Fabia vRS: 1426 mm

Golf VR6: 1405 mm

Wheelbase:

Fabia vRS: 2462 mm

Golf VR6: 2475 mm

Is anyone else surprised by this? I knew cars have been getting bigger, but I didn't realise to what extent!

Fabia, excluding the Rover 25 Is The largest "Supermini" avaliable. All of Skoda's models seem to be sized above their price band, ie The Fabia is supermini Priced and Small Family car Sized, The octavia is Small Family Priced but Large Family Sized, and The superb is Large Family priced but Large Saloon Sized.......

I did notice that, especially the ability to be able to compare the octavia to a passat, and how many doctors on call either have passats or octys is amazing, yet they dont notice a size difference at all.

I think it boils down to the chassis its based on though

The Fabia is very much equivalent to a Golf or A3 in real world terms, as the Octy is with the Passat.

One of the girls at work has a VW polo (which the fabia is based on or the other way round?) and my fabia seems far bigger than the polo. Maybe it's the bodykit and colour that just makes it seem that way, but I'm not the only one that has commented on that

Aha, are you a Dr, DavidCollins? That would explain your post in the English thread - you have obviously had your reading and writing module removed when the medical one was installed, like most Drs :D

What surprises me about this is that the Fabia uses a Polo floorpan, but is still as big as an older Golf.

A lot of the extra weight comes from modern demands for safety kit, and sound-proofing, as well as larger, more comfortable seats and extra equipment. It really does show how engine tecnology has moved on as well: while modern cars are a lot bigger and heavier, they're actually still at least as economical as their smaller ancestors.

The MK 1 Fabia (also known as Felicia) was on paper smaller than the Mk2 but in real life was roomier due to a better designed dash board. Also despite being physically bigger I think the Octy 2 is less roomy feeling inside due to the design of the dash and that rib along the centre of the roof lining.

ncarring- Hehe, na not a Dr, didnt bother with uni ;). I work supplying IT OOH (out of hours) solutions to the NHS :)

heebee- very true. I remember there was a golf gti mk1 v mkvi comparison and statistically their bhp/kg was the same.

Went out in a PD130 TDGT Golf today and it felt so fat. Very lardy compared to the vRS fabia.

No The Polo uses A Fabia Floorplan, The Poor Fabia Was a guini pig to see if it was a good chassis, if it wasn't VW Didn't look bad, Just one of those things, like people say that a Seat Toledo is a Leon with a boot, but the Leon is more correctly a Toledo Without a boot since it appeared 1st!

I guess the one thing that does suffer from the increased weight is tyre life. I'm sure they used to last a lot longer on my older, lighter cars. We must place much more demand on them for braking and traction, with so much more weight to slow down or change direction.

I am quite surprised that a Fabia weighs more than a VR6! I thought the V6 lump would put the weight right up. Does a diesel engine really way that much, or is the Fabia littered with goodies that pile on the pounds?

The 1.9TDi unit really is very heavy.

Rob.

Although interestingly the PD100 is quite a bit lighter than the vRS....

Chris

That'll be due to the big spoilers and the fancy badges... :D

My UK Scooby turbo weighed in at 1285kg! They did cheat with that though and replaced the panels with tin foil ;)

I take it no one has folded their rear seats yet? The seat bits that pull forward and drop into the footwells, they look and feel like they are from an eighties fiesta! No weight in the seats then. The four door format must add a bit over say the 2 door ibiza version and amazingly the mkiv golf gttd130 is lighter, according to autocar @1276kg vs 1315kg for the fab!!

its odd my mates mk3 vr6 golf has sandbags under the carpets !!!

The MK 1 Fabia (also known as Felicia)

I’m no expert but I thought the Felicia was a totally different model altogether, as was the Favoit, Estelle and Rapide. Skoda names have recently been criticised as they are a bit pants, but in defence of the company they have named the more recent cars after much older models.

It is also my understanding that in the 1950s the old 445 became know as the Octavia, the 450 became the Felica. These models were face lifted in the 1960s and I don’t think that these models had a lot, if anything in common with the mid 1990s versions!

The Fabia name and model was not used until the models launch in 2000 so to call the Felica a MK1 Fabia makes no sense.

Before deciding to purchase a Fabia I wanted to find out whether it would be big enough for my portly frame, so I compared it's internal dimensions with those of the Mk4 Golf that I currently drive. I was quite astonished!

Front Legroom (Min/Max):

Golf Mk4: 880-1130mm

Fabia: 860-1100mm

Front Headroom:

Golf Mk4: 979mm

Fabia: 977mm

Rear Leg room (Min/Max):

Golf Mk4: 590-845mm

Fabia: 606-846mm

Rear Headroom:

Golf Mk4: 958mm

Fabia: 952mm

Hardly anything in it

I came across some interesting figures as well.

The Fabia is on VAG's latest small car chassis while the Octavia is based on the last Golf/Bora platform.

If you look at interior space from rear seat back to front footwell the Octavia only has 24mm (1 inch) more interior space than the Fabia.

The Octavia is a little wider but all the extra length of the car is bonnet and boot. :)

Cheers

Lee
