Brakes clonking when reversing

Featured Replies

Since having the OEM pads fitted by kwik fit,my pads have stopped squealing...

Now I have another issue, they seem to clonk either when turning while reversing (I guess they are catching slightly) or braking when reversing. Saw another post on here which said its probably the pads moving slightly?

They're definitely OEM pads, I saw the box they came in (one of the vw/audi/skoda boxes) and they're branded ferodo on the outside.

Is it worth taking it back to them for the 4th time now? :( feel like screaming so fed up with this

Strangely though, it does sound incredibly like the other clonk noises I get when its cold.

I did my discs and pads the other week, and didn't/don't get this. Can't say I noticed any branding on my pads (but then again, I wasn't really looking for any ;))

Mate

double check that kwik fit have fitted the pad retaining clips in the carrier:thumbup:

I did mine the other week and apart from the odd mooing for less than a yard i haven't had any prob's:)

Hmm I can clearly see what I assume are the retaining clips? brass coloured clips at either of the caliper holding the pad in place...

Taking it to them again tomorrow :( doubt they can do much tho who knows

Another clonk to join the untraceable others lol :(

Mione did this when I fitted cheap pads. Fitted ATE ones and been fine since.

You said OEM pads out of a box with Ferodo on it, I don't think that VAG uses Ferodo at their factories, the basic outline, or "shape" of these VAG pads covers quite a few applications, with differant pad thicknesses and quite a few differant VAG part numbers, motor factors do tend to just stock a couple and try to get them accepted as fit for all applications - they do fit but can give small problems - maybe this is what is what you are discovering.

Such a clonking that your experience can be caused by nackerd/worn console bushes, get them checked before having a go at the Mech

They were changed for the cupra bushes a few months back... definitely the brakes. oh well, might start calling my car the clunkmeister

  • Author

they apparently cleaned em up again, but still just as bad.

Going to book it in elsewhere so they can check them over :( If they find something wrong kwik fit will be getting a call

Step 1 - oil changes @ Kwikfit - some hours later I return to find that they have found that you have to replace ALL the seals when replacing oil filter -minor suggestion in Haynes.

So might I suggest that something in the manual has not been done .

:( the one day i saved by going there has cost me 4 more, 5 more now with taking it elsewhere... so frickin fed up

do not use kwik fit. ever.

Hello Confused _Cheese,

Would you say, first reversing then braking, you hear a clonk, then driving forwards and braking you hear the clonk again?? and not necessarily turning the steering wheel??

If so, it is brake pad slap/ up-down movement, of the pads.

The metal lugs of the pads are striking it's housing, I packed both upper locating pad's lugs with a thin strip of metal, job done, clonking eliminated.

I hasten to add this was on the front brakes 2005 Fabia VRS, using genuine 'Mintex' replacement pads/discs.

Skoda told me I should fit genuine Skoda replacements, I laughed, since they use 'Feroda' brand and not their own 'Skoda' Brand.

Definitely a DIY job, smear metal strips with copper-based grease, and bend each-end of metal-strip's downwards each side of brake pad lug, to stop them moving out of postion.

Fingers crossed eh.

Has this anything to do with your other thread 'My mystery clonk' ?? back in March time this year.

I just got back from a local indy specialist... he put the car on a ramp and rotated the front wheel back and forth... the pads moved back and forth nearly 1cm in the caliper... the pad retaining clips were also bent to buggery.

not happy kwik fit getting an ear full and face full of brake pads

Oh dear ... it's not like they're hard to fit :(

Hope you get it sorted out soon! :)

just got off the phone from the mechanic... he thinks they *may* of ground down the sides of the pads to make them fit, but did so a little too much... then tried to bend the shims into place to hold them. apparently the shims were fitted incorrectly on the drivers side too, which after wear would cause the shim to score the disc.

hes going to show me the differences in when i go back and what they've done... will be armed with a camera

apparently they've had some pads delivered, but don't have the shims which they can get hold of tomorrow direct from skoda so giving me a courtesy car until then.

I have avoided kwik fit ever since they messed up a brake change on a previous car of mine. Never been back, and never will. When I first saw your post it was like going back in time to when they did mine.

Hello Confused_Cheese,

Thought you were experiencing what I had.

I certainly did not grind the brake-pad lugs, nor bent any shims out of shape, but still there was brake-pad slap/ up - down movement.

Can only assume the lug ends were just those few millimetres short when being manufactured.? As said mine were a 'Mintex' brand name. so not a cowboy brand.

My previous input/cure works 100% without any danger of infringement of brake operation.

Good-luck. Ian. :rolleyes::thumbup:

Mine are OEM pads, and i've been told by a mechanic who has fitted many that oem pads are a snug fit if anything. I certainly wouldn't accept having to have extra metal jammed in my brakes to fix a problem that should never of existed.

How to fit brakes the kwik fit way:

Ground the pads down 2-3 mm too short (both of these have been ground down, one a lot more obviously and none of them are anywhere near straight)

And then when the customer complains about knocking, just bend the tabs on the shims to stop them moving about (which didn't work for squat). 2 are actually broken off!:

Just got off the phone to the operational manager, whos going to refund my money

oh and top credit to vwrescue for literally rescuing my brakes! Steve was a legend and had no problems with showing me what was wrong etc. I know who'll be getting my custom next time :(

Glad your all fixed up, you live and learn eh.

If you did job yourself, it would have been right, but in your case, most certainly not have to chase people to get the job done right.

Kwik fit ground brake components down to get them to fit?

:o

Apparently oem pads are a tight fit, and they do occasionally need the top layer of paint taking off to fit in the caliper (so i'm told) but nowhere near to the extent of what they have done to these. The angles some of them are at make it look like it was a complete rush job

Oh my god, you shouldnt ever in any circumstance need to remove material from a pad, if they are tight you clean the carrier surface until they are free:thumbdwn:
