Newbie looking for a headsup...

Featured Replies

Im looking at buying a 2nd hand octavia - im a taxi driver, but mainly do a extra-urban country road run of 140 miles per day, 6 times a week

What model of octavia tdi would give me the best mpg given a budget of £6K?

many thanks

(anybody wanna buy my bus?.....lol......38mpg)

1.9 TDI is the most economical, and probably the most prevalent second hand so you shouldn't have much trouble finding plenty of examples to choose from

The current brochure quotes the following mpg for the 1.9 TDI manual hatch:

Urban: 44.8

Extra urban: 67.3

Combined: 57.6

thanks for that, it kinda confirmed my extensive 2 day research

should i watch for the "PD" thingy, is that a plus or minus?

or are they all PD now?

(he said, sounding like he knows what PD is)

1.9 TDi for economy and has plenty of power too.Won,t dissapoint  round town iam getting normally 55 mpg.

2.0TDi has lots more power and quieter being 16 valve but loses slightly on mpg.

Good luck with your search you should find a good one for that money

All the mk II Octy's (diesel's) are PD's I believe (apart from the very new CR engines).

You should be able to get around a 2006 1.9 TDI for up to £6,000 judging by a quick search on autotrader. I'm guessing 2005/6 1.9 TDI's are going to be high mileage though with plenty having done 100K or more.

Thanks Phil_P i forgot to mention about the PD thing ;)

Fairly high mileage TDi is still ok if its a 1.9 bulletproof design and been around long enough.Check its history obviously.

does the octavia 1.9tdi respond to remapping for economy/torque?

and does it like, dislike or hate bio-derv?

The other contender in my "4/5 doors, 1600cc minimum, max mpg" search was a F**d F***s 1600cc tdci but they are smaller in the cabin, and i think have a french engine.......:thumbdwn:

Don't know about the remapping, but bio-derv is a definate no no in the 1.9 tdi pd

You can run a certain mixture of bio to normal diesel. This has been discussed at some length in the Fabia I forum, if you do a search.

And yes, for economy the one you want is a PD 1.9 TDi in 105bhp form. And yes they can easily be remapped for performance and/or economy.

BTW (im on a roll) i see both 105ps and 130ps versions of the octy 1.9tdi for sale, is the 105 more economical, where can i find comparitive PS/Torque figures foe them?

(its torque what moves cars)

my Tourneo has 300 Nm of torque (2ltr/125PS)

MkII Octavia 1.9 tdi only comes in 105 bhp, you need the 2.0tdi for 140 bhp. (PD engines)

The MKI Octavia 1.9 tdi's came with 90,110 or 130 bhp.

Economy is good in the 105 bhp, see if you can at least get the Ambiente trim for your money.

off work this week, i can see a few test drives pending...

are estates thirstier than the hatchbacks?

OK, youve got £6K to spend, you want the maximum MPG over the 30-50mph extra urban country road course

which would you buy?

max 5 years old, max 100K miles

I would be looking for around a 2006 1.9TDI Ambiente with as low mileage as possible. There shouldn't be much difference in MPG between an estate and hatch, but a hatch should be slightly better plus probably slightly cheaper to buy.

I'd also consider one of the last of the Mk1 Octavias.

You'll get a high spec low mileage diesel with the PD130 or the older 110 bhp TDI (which is very economical) for less than your budget.

got to be a max 5 years old tho, when were the model changes?

Well , you can still get taxi-spec ones now , but I'm pretty sure the last of the wider line up was on a 54 plate - I've seen an Ambiente SE with the PD130 engine on a 54.

It seems the estates were being produced until October 04 , so there could have been stock in some dealers into 2005.

54 plates would have been most likely , but an 05 wouldn't be out of the question.

Q. when was the Octavia tdi give a 6 speed gearbox?

55 plate estate, 52K miles, cant tell exactly what model, in red.

but £7600 seems a lot, and the salesman could only tell me "if it was a passat it would be worth more and its exactly the same car"

yes........rite..............

A Tdi with a 6-speed box makes me think it's one of the run-out 1.9TDi130s. the red in the TDi bit is the easiest way of checking that.

Just had a ride in the back of a 1.9TDi taxi. Very nice it was too. Just the base model but still comfy. Loads of room. (Must get my wife to chauffeur me around in mine - never been in the back except to vacuum out the kids' crumbs!)

The cabbi extimated his did around 37-40 in city traffic all day long.

HTH.

The salesman might want to compare the Octavia with a Passat, but the Octavia shares the same floorpan as the Golf and not the Passat.
