iPod touch/ iPhone batteries

Featured Replies

Hmm not a great response to my last question. Anyway anyone replaced the sealed battery on one of these at apple. What's the damage?

Got an ipod touch 2nd G. Not practical to try and replace myself as I will only ruin it. Will an apple store replace or do you have to buy a new device?

They will replace, but IIRC you're looking at £80+

Some models have soldered batteries and IIRC the iphone 3GS has a connector on the lead to make it easier.

IF warranty isn't a problem to you: 1800MAH REPLACEMENT BATTERY & TOOLS FOR IPHONE 3G 3GS on eBay (end time 13-Nov-09 14:59:00 GMT)

Interesting.. do you happen to know the rating of the standard battery? (And why don't they put a better one in from the bloody factory?! :thumbdwn:)

I wouldnt by ANY battery from ebay.

Most have a habit of exploding due to being fakes

Its to do with size limitations. The bigger the battery in capacity terms the bigger it has to be physically.

Hence why you see these extended batteries for the G1:

Bit confused with that price list: what is the difference between repair price, Battery aasp (or something) and battery price online?

No they don't at all.

*some* third party batteries won't be great quality and could cause problems but the vast majority will work just fine.

I've not had an issue with any of the camera or phone batteries I've had from ebay , and to say "most" is saying that a large majority will explode which is nonsense.

AASP = Apple Authorised Service Provider, this could be a repair centre close to you or even an Apple store.

I am assuming AASP is cheaper as you will drop off and collect another Ipod.

The online price probably includes delivery and collection charges.

All prices shown include VAT.

I strongly advise you to read the FAQ as it isn't a case of sending it off, them sticking a new battery in it and then it being sent back to you, they EXCHANGE your ipod for a refurbed unit.

AFAIK you can send your ipod off and get the same one back through this page: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

I've never done this myself, all of this info is what I have picked up from dredging the apple support pages. Someone who has actually done it might be better informed :o

Ahh good to see the apple sealed battery tax is back.

The battery is not really much to do with it, it's more the charge cycles that the battery can take.

If you use it a lot or leave it on charge in a car etc, then you will get about 1000 charge cycles (current charge to full) before it starts to degrade.

That is just the tech that is used and to IMHO they should be easily replaceable.

While apple are particularly annoying for sealed batteries, I will admit they are not the only ones that do it.
