EGR bypass

Featured Replies

I have noticed that a few of you have bypassed your EGR valve and once taken off the warning light comes on i know it can be mapped out.

BUT on my vectra i blanked it off and left the EGR plugged in with no warning lights comeing on, now just a thought but if you put in the bypass pipe but left the EGR plugged in just cabel tied up out of the way would it still throw up a warning light?

I think it will as the sensor won't be seeing what it's supposed to

just wounderd as the egr on the vectras where prone to going ****y so hence me blanking it

an excuse for a map? :D

map strut brace and splitter will be done within a week of picking it up :-)

The way the Engine Management sences the EGR on fabias is a drop in frow through the MAF.

If the drop isnt visable, the ECU thinks the EGR is broken, so thats why the light comes on.

Shame really.

thanks for that i was woundering why no one had done it that way suppose thats why lol

Not a problem.

I tryed writting it in a way anyone could understand (not saying your thick or anything), but I know some people arnt as engineering minded as others.

so with it removed what are you actualy gaining? i know on the vectras if they stop working/clog up then engine runs like a bag of spanners and you loose alot of power. is it the same with the fabias or is there more to it ie performance wise?

1: Increased emissions (NoX)

2: Increased combustion temperatures

3: Hesitation reductions at part throttle.

4: Reduced soot levels in intake manifold.

3 and 4 are good. 1 isn't a problem as MOT only measures soot density

2 is a bit more complex. Increased combustion temp will keep the EGT higher, and burn off soot from the turbo VNT and exhaust side compressor wheel. There is a risk of engine damage at sustained cruise, as this is when EGR is used most. Without it, and with prolonged light load cruise speeds, engine temps will be higher. Most likely damage would be piston crown and valves, and cylinder head cracking around the valve seats.

so no point doing it then at that sort of risk

I've had my EGR completely removed for about 10k now.... Recently drove to newquay and back (over 700 miles) on cruise control with no problems, returned an "indicated" 67mpg average and didn't melt my pistons in the process..

Plus the trip to nurburgring and back, which was 1000 miles etc.

Kev

Ive also been without my EGR for awhile (few months but racked up some miles) however mine didnt throw up a engine light?

Been without an EGR for about 4 years :D No damage whatsoever, and I don't think it alone would affect any heat issues in regard to EGTs and piston meltage. A remap is probably more prone to that kind of outcome, at least if driven badly.

This is how my EGR pipe looked when inspected a little while ago after about 30,000 miles EGR'less. Really badly clogged up. :D

I've had mines removed for a good few thousand miles now with no issues. Done Blackpool and back and use my cruisde control several times a week

thanks for the replays intresting how peoples advice differs so much

with this mod, is there any increase in performance or is it just making it more healthy for the car?

EGR only works at light engine loads. When you gun it, the EGR flow is shut off. So no, it will do nothing for performance. Some people report a slight drop in MPG.

Ive had mine removed for about 5k and been fine, like Kev said above I've chalked up 30 ring laps or something and no problem at all. I did notice there's a bit less smoke on my ring pictures this year though on some of the corner exits!
