Skoda Touch Up Paint (How to)

Featured Replies

Ok.. This is going to appear a little daft. :D

Bought a new pair of wipers and they didn't sit correctly at first and knocked a small portion of paintwork on the column (bare-metal now).

Ordered touch up paint from a VW dealer and it has come today. There's two small tubes, one the colour of the car, another a clear coat which I'm assuming goes on later.

Thing is, everything is written in checkoslovakian? So wondering if there is actually any procedure, I've had a browse round searching 'touch-up' on here and google but can't find if there is any special requirements. I.e., prime the patch first with anything, wait so long before applying the clear coat... etc

Thanks!

The kits you get from Halfords have a primer, colour and lacquer, and on that basis you'll need to prime the chip first. Having said this, the primer is there as much to fill the hole as it is to help the coloured paint to adhere, and I just add a spot of colour to the chip and leave it at that. Depends how much of a perfectionist you are, I suppose. Or in my case, how long you think it'll be until another chip comes along...

Haha, well it's more about just covering the small chip to stop rusting so I can probably live with a quick job!

Think I'll go for adding a spot of the colour and potentially applying the clear stuff later, can't be any worse than leaving it as it is exposed to the elements!

Do the job in one go. Mix colour coat and laquer 50/50, job done.

Yeah, I hate it that the Skoda stuff only has Czech instructions (but "Made In Germany" in English!!). All I could make of it was shake the coloured paint for 1min before using it, and apply when it's 15C or warmer?

Basic procedure was white primer, then paint, then lacquer, allowing a fair bit of drying time. I found it helped a lot to use a number 00 paint brush, rather than the supplied one for small chips, as it gives you much more control.

I did think the brush was a little on the large size for chip-touch up.

And exactly, I can about decipher the 'shake for 1 min' instruction and that is about it! Terrible really... Guess it can't go too wrong:rolleyes: Probably do it in the two steps although mixing is an idea MoggyTech...

I have the Skoda touch up sticks and I noticed there is a mini wire brush on the paint top, what is this used for? Also there is only two sticks, paint and I assume lacquer, so what do you use as Primer?

As mentioned above, all the info is in Czech and the diagram is not really useful. So what do you do?

I gathered that the wire brush is to remove rust!

...and yes, I'm lacking in the primer (hoping It'll do without)

Yep, that's what the top brush is for

I also back up the #00 size brush to sort the touch-up out. Tap that on, give it some time to try, then a little lacquer over the top

You can try also to use something like Google Translate or other web translator...

I use a cocktail stick to apply it :)

+1...much finer point makes it easy to build up a layer of paint, rather than a single blob which you get from the brush inside the lid.

Depending on the size of the chip you can also cut down the end of the cocktail stick for really fine scratches/chips etc.

Yep, I've used a toothpick in the past - same difference I guess :)

Also worth masking the surrounding area as best you can too, just in case! I used 3M detailing tape last time IIRC.
