Where is oil leaking from?

Featured Replies

I have an oil leak and need some help identifying what it is that's leaking. There is a cylindrical metal object slightly protruding from the engine cover in front of the front offside wheel - PAS pump? Steering rack maybe?

Any help much appreciated!

PAS pump is located on the nearside under the battery and uses green power steering fluid. My guess is you are looking at a intercooler pipe as I'm guessing you have a diesel? If this is the case the leak is caused by oil entering the air intake system. If it's just a small amount then this is not a real problem as the breather system will cause this. Sometimes you can replace the seals on the pipes to reduce the oil drips. If you remove the pipe and loads of oil comes out you may have a Turbo issue but odds are it's just breather residue.

yep, just the intercooler pipework, nothing to worry about

Had more time to search forum this morning and found this post - pictures show the part I was looking at, which is the Turbo boost hose I think. Thanks for the help

Hi: I've an 05 Octavia 1.9TDI 99,000 miles and it was leaking oil from underneath the turbo pipe. It can happen if you're not driving the car hard enough, not sure the correct way of it but it's oil that builds up because the turbo's not being used. I drive like a granny so can't argue. Apparently turbo diesels need to be flogged now and again to keep them breathing right. You can buy stuff to pour into the tank called Cataclean, a mechanic sold it to me but most motor factors have it. It cleans the cat, turbo, valves etc and other parts that need it. It's about £16 I used it on mine and it's fine now.

Mst likely this is what's causing it.

Not sure but it's not important where it's building up it's where it should be going that matters. In my case it wasn't going anywhere, important thing is to get rid of it and that's what I done with Cataclean.

the crankcase vents into the turbo intake....oil vapoured air flows around the intake system and occasionally leaks via the hose connections...only way to eradicate this is doing the elephant hose mod...cataclean has got to have something to do with the cat obviously....dont understand the relevance.... :wonder:

If cataclean goes in the fuel tank how the hell can it get into the intake system, given that it's a direct injection diesel engine. Honestly, some of the information being offered on here beggars belief. WH has given the correct explanation.
