Overheating problem

Featured Replies

Hey guys new to site so hi to all.

Problem arisen with my vrs

driving to work other day when temperature sensor came on, pulled over loosened header tank cap system was pressurised but water appeared low then rushed up to top as undone cap more. Temp gauge now at max but no room to put any more coolant in. Thought system maybe airlocked. Left car couple of hours went back to find no water in system so topped up. Soon as i started it temp gauge started climbing to the max again.

Cant find any bleed screws in any rad pipes. Heater only blowing cold air when at normal operating temp. Removed thermostatand dropped into boiling water and it was very slow to open in fact the water was at a fast boil when it gradually started to open, could this be my problem or could it be that the impellor on the water pump has sheared?

Any help much obliged, cheers:(

sounds like the water pump has sheared off.!!!

this is not uncommon or the plastic type impella. i would stop driving the car as you will be causing damage to the block etc etc and istead of just cambelt and water pump it will be a new engine,

good luck mate 99.9 % sure im correct:thumbup:

aye car is laid up, had heard other people telling me that impellor is prone to breaking up.

is it possible to get water pump with metal type impellor?

cheers

believe you can get metal impellor type water pump, but the new water pumps are of a better standard so you can stick with the plastic one.

Hello and welcome

It is very common for the water pumps to break up

That is why at a cam belt change we ALWAYS replace the water pump

If the impella breaks off what happens is , at low speed and tickover , what is left of the impella can keep up and will not overheat

If you put your foot down , the temp will creap up , as what is left can`t cope

Yes , again we ALWAYS rplace with the metal impella`d water pumps

Not that expensive , in fact about same price as the OEM one

We do thousands of these in the past , and have never known any issues with them

I run metal on my Fabia too

For the Octy we sell them on line Awesome > Water Pump with Metal Impeller GO4/TT/A3/Leon/Oct 1.8T

I hope that helps?

The water pump problem is well known & a common one,i personally would replace the thermostat & try it first(even more so as you have had it out to test it!)you may be lucky & its a duff stat,i had same problem on a bmw mini this week & a new stat fixed it!:) As others have said its probably the water pump breaking up,let us know how you get on.

Hi Bob,

A quick test to give you a bit more info:

Put the thermostat back in. Run car until temp just tips over the 90 mark (no need to cook it) and then check the radiator in/out hoses. Both should be at the same temp. If they are not, the thermostat has most likely jammed closed or the thermostat housing itself has failed (this happened on my old polo and meant the thermostat had nothin g to push against to open itself). If the hoses are at the same temp then it is likely the waterppump.

Cheers,

iep
