won't start help

Featured Replies

hello, this is the first day of skoda ownership, which comes in the form of a 1.6 mpi 2000 'x' reg felicia pick up, that i have picked up for 255 pounds.... however , the reason for the "bargain" is that the inlet manifold had cracked in half, so we towed it home, and brought a new one for 20 pounds, (from a polo) we fitted it but still wouldn't start. we then realised that there was no fuel getting up and it turned out to be that the fuel lines were back to front, so we put these right, got fuel in the fuel rail and through the injectirs, and still nothing, we checked the spark, and there was a good strong spark for 3/4 rotations and then nothing...what could cause this?

i'm thinking it may be the coil pack?? but i had a similar problem with a mk3 golf and it turned out to be the ecu. any help with this matter will be greatly received.

Distributer cap? give it a clean

Fuel pump

sounds strangely like head gasket problems?

When mine went it refused to start unless the acc pedal was depressed.

diagnostic check first, you will chase faults round and round in circles for ever more unless you have some idea where to start looking

thanks for the reply, but would it stop sparking if it was the head gasket?? checked the fuel pump, lots of pressure and checked the dizzy cap, brand new and fine.

yeah, that'll have to be my next line of action if it's not the coil pack!!

Check the Vag-com owners map to see who is near you. They will probably be willing to hook the car up to their laptop and give it a scan for you for a beer token or cuppa:

If you're getting a spark then that rules out immobiliser and crank sensor faults.

ok, before you go buying out a new coil/amplifier are you definitely getting an LT signal at pin 2 ?

hi, whats an LT signal???

we changed all of the above today, still nothing, we changed the dizzy and changed the ecu and still the same. we cleaned the spark plugs and it started for about 4-5 seconds and then nothing, so still loss of spark!!! if you turn the ignition off and then start it again, it does the same. so it not the coil pack,dizzy/hall and its not the ecu!! i am at a loss, there's a a tuner around the corner if it come's to it i'll take it to him.. on a brighter note found some 15 inch steelies for it...going to be banded to 9 and 8 inches wide.:D gotta get it going first thou...

if you've changed the ecu you need to reset the learned values in the immobilizer for it to start. use vag-com..

first clear the ecu AND immobilizer fault memmories (01 & 25) then..

select, immo 25, adaption 10, channel 00, read then write 00 to channel 00 ignition off then on.. job done

sorry for my ignorance, but do i need a diagnostic to do this??? also the same thing is happening as before the ecu was changed, and i have changed it back to the original. have booked it in for wednesday, but if i can solve the problem before then than all the better a bargain it is!!

whereabouts are you? it sounds like an engine blocked by immo fault...

i'm in sittingbourne in kent. do you think its an easy fix??;)

it's a bit too far out for me to come, maybe somebody else nearer can do it

thanks anyhow, so the best thing would be to put it on a diagnostic??? seems like such a simple thing. fuel + spark = job done. i'll let you know the outcome. thanks again for your help:thumbup:

yeah you'd think so, but it's a liittle bit more involved when you have transponders and the like. a simple diagnostics wont help you much tbh. you need somebody with vag-com or similar

o.k. got it to the local tuners and he thinks its the immobiliser fault too, so booked in to be read by a vw garage down the road tomorrow, fingers crossed!!!

just a thought, but does anyone know if these pickups came with a fob to turn the immobiliser on/off as i don't have one????

no there is no fob, there is transponder chip in the ignition key

stupid question, but they'll be able to sort this with a vag.com??...hows this done?? is it really a simple as resetting it??

i only ask this because when i went into my local vw garage, and told them i had a skoda truck, they just looked at me as if i had 2 heads, until i explained that it had the vw 1.6mpi engine. then a guy said that they'd plug it in, but couldn't garantee that they would be able to sort it as it doesn't always work with a skoda this guy has.

i have wrote down the reset directions teflontom has kindly given me and i will take that down with me, just hope they make sense of them, as they didn't fill me with any confidence:confused:

if the key has become unprogrammed from the immo unit, you will need a login code/skc to access the adaption block in the immo unit. but if it's just an ecu change you dont need it.... take my word for it. i expect they wont be using vag-com, they will have vag5053 or similar, but the procedure is the same, immo 25, adaption 10, channel 00 read then write, ignition off then on.. but you will need to have cleared the fault memmory from the immo and ecu first..... to double check that it works afterwards you can go to, immo 25, measurement blocks 08, group 01, and you should get 4 fields labelled; authorised, ecu respond, key condition, matched keys... the first 3 should all have a 1, and matched keys will say n/a because they have a fixed code which all have the same key number... if the field 'authorised' says 0 then the key is not matched to the immo unit. in which case you need to do, immo 25, login 11, enter the 7 diigit code, ok, adation 10, channel 01, etc etc

take a printout of this thread with you, if they cannot do something simple like adapt an ecu in i would be sorely dissapointed

took it to vw today and they seem to think it maybe the ecu recognising the key and then not recognising the key, and turning on the immobiliser. so they have to send off for the skoda codes as they only have vw ones?????

faults came back with throttle valve fault, which makes sense as i put a polo one on it, and something to do with the ecu but it wasn't explained very well.

they'll get back to me tomorrow and let me know the deal!!

hmm, sounds fishy to me, and the polo throttle body should be exactly the same assuming it came from an engine with the same engine code (aee)

still no joy today, they haven't had the time to look at it, so i'll pop in tomorrow, and if its not done i'll drag it home, and give it a clean out etc....any one local to sittingbourne in kent got a vag.com or similar????

  • Author

o.k. so she's a started, apparently. havn't been down to get it yet but i phoned at 5.30 and the guy in the service dept said he's heard it running, so stay tuned and i'll let you know what they say it was, and how much it cost to fix $$$$$$$ i bet!!!

  • Author

so the report read, disabled ecm, and open circuit on the throttle valve. also temp sensor is reading -5 and should be 10??? so i drove it home. all i need to do now is get in tuned as it is very lumpy. nothing a service won't sort out.... hopefully!!!!!

drove it into work this morning and the engine cleared itself, now drives like new....m.o.t tomorrow fingers crossed
