Exhausts

Featured Replies

Hey folks.

I changed the rear silencer on Nelly about 2 years/15,000 miles ago now (I think ) and it seems that it has gone again. It rattle about when you shake it and there is a resonating/vibrating sound from it at roughly 2000rpm.

So my first question is... How long should they last?

And my second one is... Should I replace it with another cheap (sub £30) part or go for an OEM one from the dealers perhaps?

The ones I have been looking at on ebay as a rough price guide are manufactured by a company called "Timax".

The exhaust that was on the car when I got it has an oval shaped end to it which from what I can gather is either the 1.6 one or one that is listed as "sports". The current one is just a round pipe on the end but other than that they looked identical.

I guess that's just bad luck maybe. Think I paid £35 or £40 for an exhaust section fully fitted (non genuine). I seem to remember the OEM one's parts only price weren't too bad £50 to £60 so if it lasts over twice as long may be worth it.

Yeh bloody sods law more like... it had a 2yr warranty on the blasted thing!

I think to be honest I will just go cheap again though try to avoid the brand that I got last time.

Just wanted to know how long they should last!

I will probably leave it for another few months yet though as there's no holes in it and is only slightly noisy if held at that lower rpm.

If it's not holed, give it a slap with the palm of your hand. If it makes a tinkling sound then the baffles are breaking up.

Otherwise I'd suspect a hole elsewhere or a different box.

Have have already tried shaking it and it rattle like a rattle snake shaking a rattle in a tumble dryer full of rattles!

It is obviously cheaply made and the baffles are just of poor quality!

If I had the time/money I would do some tinckering and get a very modest back box on to give a nicer sound when giving it some along with perhaps a straight through section in place of the cat but TBH I can't really warrant that sort of thing at the moment (just taking out a mortgage *gulp*).

Phil - it's no coincidence that they expire just after the warranty. Clever people, these exhaust manufacturers. Usually I find that they last a couple of years for a cheapy, and 3-4 for a more expensive one, and OEM ones are often longest- lived.

Well I went cheapy again.

In view of just buying a house and it needing work doing etc I though the money was better spent there and not on a rear silencer on a 14 year old car!

Cost me £25 all in from Andrew Page and then 30 mins under the car to fit it.

Pretty good price I think.

The old one had got to the stage where the the pipe leading into the silencer had rusted completely off which was pretty noisy as you can imagine.

One thing that baffles me (excuse the pun!) is where do all the baffle go?!!? There was nothing inside the exhaust anymore. Do they break down and get blasted out the back over time?

Lovely and quiet now.

York motor factors wanted to charge me £45 for their 'budget' exhaust!

I think they do get fired out the back over time, yes.

haha, yeah, the exhuast on my pickup had only been on there about a month when i bought it, and now there is nothing left inside it, it gradually makes it's way out the back

If the baffles break up, it's entirely possible for them to get fired out the back. Sooner or later, if you wander about car parks, you'll find a car with a small patch of flakes of something carbony or rusty under the end of the exhaust pipe. Guess what that is!

also they can look like long lengths of horses hair
